2020.08.23 11:49 zzpza [META] POTW Retrospective 2017

It's always fun to go back and look at these retrospectives on the anniversary of the first POTW. I started the Photographer of the Week award scheme 8 years ago, after a community discussion about not knowing much about the artists that post here. The original POTW scheme was very work heavy to produce. I've automated the process as much as possible (I'm no coder, but am getting better) and with the help of my fellow mods we've stream lined it as much as we can, but it is still very complex, so please bear with us when we have the odd error or delay.

Reasons Why I Still Play FM08 – The First Five Years (Year 1, Part 2)
WARNING: VERY LONG POST. READ AT YOUR OWN LEISURE.

NB: This is part TWO of a TWO-part series. If you haven’t yet read part ONE, please click here.
Sunday 1st June 2008
The leagues are complete, the European competitions are decided, it’s time to see the damage done.
Premier League
We’ll start with the Premier League and, as expected, Man Utd held on to their strong advantage to retain the title, the top-scoring Reds finishing 1 goal and 6 points ahead of Arsenal. Liverpool and Man City claim the remaining Champions League places, whilst Portsmouth finished a point ahead of Everton to claim the first available UEFA Cup place.
Fulham would’ve needed a mathematical miracle to have survived relegation, and Middlesbrough were already related going into the final day so a draw with Wigan meant little to them, but Wigan were already safe thanks in part to what was essentially a relegation play-off match between Birmingham and Sunderland. A win for either team would see them survive but a draw would not be enough for Sunderland.
David Connolly stepped up and scored a highly contentious goal for Sunderland in a tightly contested game. Birmingham City couldn’t believe what they believed was an offside goal was allowed to stand and replays have since shown that they may have had every right to feel aggrieved about that goal. They did not, however, do enough to get back into the match and although an equaliser would’ve seen them survive, they could not muster one and now drop down into the Championship.
Kevin Doyle has the last laugh in his ongoing feud with Leroy, pipping him to the Golden Boot for Reading with 25 goals to Lita’s 24. Andy Johnson rounds off the top 3 with 23 goals for Everton. Cani’s 16 assists see him take the non-existent playmaker of the year award, 3 clear of John Carew. I shall forever call this the Playmaker Award now.
The league table is as follows:

https://preview.redd.it/a1ngygktqfd51.png?width=844&format=png&auto=webp&s=5c2369d745ec5ef9adca0149a6452b39ac24ba94
Overachievers: Man City, Derby County, West Ham
Underachievers: Tottenham, Chelsea, Bolton, Middlesbrough
West Ham seal European football through the Euro Vase, aka Intertoto Cup, by virtue of the fact that apparently neither Everton or Chelsea, nor Blackburn bothered to apply.
As we know, Portsmouth secured European football through 5th place but wait… Newcastle and Derby are also in Europe?!
This can only mean one thing…
FA Cup
Derby comfortably defeated Blackburn 3-1 at Wembley while Newcastle played out a dramatic 3-3 draw with Portsmouth. The game would be settled by penalties, with Portsmouth scoring their first 2 and Newcastle missing them both. Nerves got the better of the Pompey players as Newcastle scored their next 3 and Portsmouth missed all of them. Incredible scenes in the capital.

https://preview.redd.it/8ijwjicuqfd51.png?width=841&format=png&auto=webp&s=f088b1a22b1aa57508725805c0cf6cc968b82901
Not to be outdone, Derby and Newcastle would contest a fierce final themselves. James Milner wins the header from the goalkeeper’s free kick to nod down to Barton who returns a through ball for Milner to slot home in the 22nd minute. However, Derby would hit back on the brink of half-time, in part thanks for a huge stroke of good fortune: David Jones’ free kick on the edge of the box taking a huge deflection off the wall to wrong-foot Shay Given.
Deadlocked at 90 minutes, the game moved into extra time. More free kick fortune for Derby as Ulrik Yttergård Jenssen’s freekick deflects off the wall as well and into the path of Daniel Fredheim Holm who lashed home high into the net. However with the clock pushing 122 minutes, Derby go on the attack instead of taking it the corner flag. They would be punished with a flowing Newcastle counterattack, Nicky Butt feeding Derek Boateng who flights a ball to the back post for an unmarked Claudio Caçapa to nod home a dramatic late equaliser.
The penalty shootout would be quick and painless. Derby’s players, mentally crushed from conceding such a late goal and dissolved of all confidence, missed all 3 of their penalties to concede the FA Cup to Newcastle United.

https://preview.redd.it/ee35dfnvqfd51.png?width=842&format=png&auto=webp&s=592ce72a26e286ece94ed1939cc7a56cb3889c6a
Consolation for Derby is that, because Newcastle already secured European football through their League Cup victory, they will also be playing in Europe thanks to being FA Cup runners up. Incredible for a team that was predicted to be relegated this season.
Championship
Charlton return to the top division, hanging on to top spot despite losing to West Brom on a final day, as Sheffield United could only muster a draw at home to Southampton. Watford, West Brom, QPR and Southampton make up the playoff hopefuls whilst Hull, Sheffield Wednesday and Colchester all drop down into League One. All three relegated teams’ fates were sealed before the final day, so Hull’s 2-0 win at home to Ipswich was in vain.
Stoke and Crystal Palace played each other in a play-off decider, with Stoke knowing that any win would secure them 6th place. Palace needed a win against Stoke and a favour from title-chasing Sheffield United against Southampton to leapfrog both Stoke and Southampton into 6th. As such, Southampton needed to better Stoke’s result to secure the playoffs. As it transpired, Crystal Palace’s dramatic 90th minute winner away to Stoke was not enough as Southampton played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Sheffield United.
Massive credit to Scunthorpe who were predicted to finish rock bottom this season and defied all expectations by finishing 9th, just 3 points off the playoffs. Unbelievable effort from QPR too, who flouted their 18th place prediction by finishing 5th in the playoff places.
Marlon King would finish top scorer for Watford with 30 goals, well clear of second place István Ferenczi, Kevin Kyle picking up the Playmaker Award with 14 assists.
Playoff Semi Finals – leg 1
QPR 1 – 1 West Brom
Southampton 2 – 0 Watford
Playoff Semi Finals – leg 2
West Brom 2 – 0 QPR << West Brom win 3-1 on aggregate
Watford 2 – 1 Southampton << Southampton win 3-2 on aggregate
Playoff Final
Southampton 1 – 2 West Brom
A cagey 2-1 win for West Brom as Chris Brunt scores a late winner from a set piece. Sherjill MacDonald may well have offside for the opener as Zoltan Gera played a lovely ball in to the near post and Southampton may well have a right to be upset with referee Lee Probert. If the build-up to the equaliser was scrappy, the finish certainly wasn’t: a ball lifted over the top by Jason Euell is despatched exquisitely on the volley by David McGoldrick. Chris Brunt would have the last laugh in this one, sticking a 20yard free kick into the top corner to send West Bromwich Albion back into the Premier League.

https://preview.redd.it/0yrrfjr4rfd51.png?width=844&format=png&auto=webp&s=81c1fb45847ee4d66475e7fdcc29174856bbf490
Overachievers: QPR, Scunthorpe, Barnsley
Underachievers: Preston, Sheffield Wednesday, Cardiff City, Colchester United
League One
Business as expected for the top two as Nottingham Forest win the league and Swansea City seal automatic promotion. Yeovil needed favours on the final day to usurp Swansea but did themselves none in the process by drawing in what transpired to be a dead rubber against Bristol Rovers. Doncaster needed to better Carlisle’s result to go up but instead both teams lost, and Carlisle held onto 6th place. Brighton could’ve taken advantage of that slip but lost to champions Nottingham Forest, whilst Oldham could’ve shocked everybody but ultimately lost to Southend instead.
All four relegated teams were already down going into the final day: Northampton, Leeds, Tranmere and Leyton Orient.
Frazier Campbell of Wallsall and Marvin Williams of Yeovil would share the Golden Boot between them with 32 goals, 4 clear of veteran striker Tore André Flo. Brian Howard’s impressive displays for Yeovil meant he claimed the Playmaker Award with 20 assists.
Playoff Semi Finals – leg 1
Luton 2 – 1 Walsall
Carlisle 1 – 3 Yeovil
Playoff Semi Finals – leg 2
Walsall 0 – 0 Luton << Luton win 2-1 on aggregate
Yeovil 3 – 1 << Yeovil win 6-2 on aggregate
Playoff Final
Luton 4 – 1 Yeovil << Luton promoted after extra time
An open-ended affair with chances aplenty for both sides, Luton taking the lead inside the first 5 minutes, full-back Alan Goodall whipping a lovely ball into the near post for Sam Parkin to tuck away. Yeovil would be reduced to ten me early in the second half, Terrell Forbes hospital pass clearance met by the head of Luton’s Chris Hackett who nodded into the path of striker Drew Talbot. Talbot was unable to get his shot away clearly as Matthew Rose stuck out a leg to bring Talbot down and was sent off for a professional foul, drawing large protests from the Yeovil players.
Still, Yeovil pressed and five minutes later they’d find an unlikely equaliser. Brian Howard, standing over a free kick 30 yards out, goes for the audacious and gets a huge slice of luck as the free kick clatters off the wall, sends the keeper the wrong way and flies into the empty net.
Brave Yeovil would hold out the 90 minutes but unfortunately, Luton would make the extra man count in extra time, substitute Sol Davis starting the procession with a delightful free kick on the edge of the box. Tidy finishes from David Edwards and Willie Gibson rounded off a fine performance from Luton as they sealed their place in next season’s Championship.

https://preview.redd.it/bkaziqu8rfd51.png?width=843&format=png&auto=webp&s=c55d9f1700bfaa285ca402f45f7d697b20801452
Overachievers: Walsall, Brighton, Cheltenham, Yeovil
Underachievers: Leeds, Tranmere, Millwall
Maybe slightly harsh to put Leeds in there with a 15-point deduction, but without it they would’ve finished 10th which is still way below expectations.
League Two
Impressive Bury romped to a surprise League Two victory, 5 points clear of Peterborough who in turn were 6 points clear of Chesterfield. On-loan youngster Chedwyn Evans’ 24 league goals complementing striker partner Andy Bishop’s 22 league goals to good effect.
MK Dons’ Jemal Johnson would score 4 goals in a 5-2 away thriller at Brentford to snatch the Golden Boot away from Morecambe’s Michael Twiss, who must’ve hoped his two goals against Barnet would’ve been enough, Johnson finishing the season on 25 goals. Kevin McBride of Darlington wins the Playmaker Award.
Grimsby could’ve been relegated on the last day had they, as they did, lost to Hereford but in the end it mattered not as Barnet and Mansfield, who only needed a win to try and survive, both suffered heavy defeats to drop out of the Football League.
Playoff Semi Final – leg 1
Shrewsbury 1 – 2 Darlington
Macclesfield 0 – 2 Morecambe
Playoff Semi Final – leg 2
Darlington 1 – 1 Shrewsbury << Darlington win 3-1 on aggregate
Morecambe 3 – 2 Macclesfield << Morecambe win 5-2 on aggregate
Playoff final
An incredible event as teams predicted to finish 12th and 21st met in the playoff final. Morecambe’s firepower really should’ve seen them through here, but it was Darlington who took an early lead through Gregg Blundell.
Darlington must’ve feared the worst when top scorer Pawel Abbott was taken off injured after the half-hour mark. It took Morecambe until the 79th minute to get off the mark through, Jamie Forrester providing the breakthrough. Smart thinking from goalkeeper Steven Drench sees Forrester run through a gap the size of Jupiter between the two centre backs to collect the long punt forward and slot home.
Darlington would somehow have the last laugh though, Tommy Wright slotting him neatly 3 minutes later for a famous win, taking Darlington up to League One

https://preview.redd.it/m8t0l57crfd51.png?width=844&format=png&auto=webp&s=6f94715ce63781bdc9085c33b619229cb10d57c0
Overachievers: Morecambe, Macclesfield, Accrington Stanley, Darlington, Bury
Underachievers: Bradford, Rotherham, Brentford, MK Dons, Rochdale, Grimsby, Barnet, Mansfield
Honestly, take your pick. Crazy season in League Two.
Non-League
Oxford won the Conference Premier, 9 points ahead of the playoff hopefuls. Rushden & Diamonds steamrollered Stevenage 4-0 in the final, who themselves had reached the final via a 90th minute winner against Crawley, who themselves had an excellent season after being predicted to finish 19th and instead finished 2nd, even with a 6-point deduction. Simeon Jackson wins top goal scorer with 33 league goals for Rushden & Diamonds.
Overachievers: Salisbury, Histon, Crawley, Rushden & Diamonds
Underachievers: Exeter, York, Torquay, Ebbsfleet, Kidderminster, Burton

https://preview.redd.it/cz3nwj2erfd51.png?width=851&format=png&auto=webp&s=af2562e64a445924f67c6fae2a98cb245648cad7
Southport win the Conference North and Boston United win the playoff final, beating Kettering on penalties. Alfreton, Hyde and Vauxhall are all relegated.
Lewes win the Conference South and Dorchester Town win the playoff final, beating Braintree on penalties. Havant & Waterlooville, Hayes & Yeading and Fisher Athletic are all relegated.
League round-up. We’ve already talked about the overachievers and underachievers, so let’s quickly compare the media predictions to the teams’ actual finishing positions. Should we castigate the media? Or should be laud and slate the teams who, for better or worse, defied expectations?
The final position is denoted to the right of the team, with the change from the prediction one over.

What do the media know, eh?
The game also has its own season summary for each league which pretty much covers everything I’ve already shared but for those interested, see below:

UEFA Cup
It seems like forever ago since we saw European competition. I will skip ahead, so here are the First and Second Knockout Round results.
First Round

https://preview.redd.it/zm64vwrlrfd51.png?width=478&format=png&auto=webp&s=a730b92e911d7d70aaff43e11de4dd290b7b561b
Second Round

Gritty performances throughout. For those of you wondering why FC Bayern are in the UEFA Cup it’s because they finished 4th in the Bundesliga in 06/07 behind champions VfB Stuttgart, 2nd place Schalke and 3rd place Werder Bremen. They entered at the UEFA Cup first round, essentially a final qualifying round. In-game, they defeated FC Twente 5-1 on aggregate to reach the group stage. They finished 3rd in their group, behind Fiorentina and Bolton.

Quarter Finals
All relatively straight forward in the Quarter Finals too, Bayern and Tottenham progress comfortably whilst Porto and Fiorentina had to do a bit of digging in to get the job done.
FC Bayern (6) 3 - 0 (1) Werder Bremen
Dinamo Kiev (2) 2 - 2 (4) Porto
Tottenham (5) 1 - 1 (2) Blackburn
Fiorentina (3) 0 - 0 (2) Girondins Bordeaux

Semi Finals
Bayern and Fiorentina met again in the Semi Finals to relive their group match (which was a 1-1 draw). The Semi Final would prove to be hotly contested again, Bayern stealing the victory in the 90th minute through Bastian Schweinsteiger, although replays show he may well have been offside. Luca Toni and Adrian Mutu were the other goal scorers.
The second leg lived up to the billing as well, Bayern taking the lead mid-way through the first half through Miroslav Klose’s smart run and finish. Mark van Bommel added an unlikely second on the night through a sublime freekick which left Fiorentina needing 4 goals to go through. Adrian Mutu led a one-man crusade with a brace in the 63rd and 69th minute respectively before substitute Massimo Gobbi’s tidy 73rd minute finish set up a nervy finale. However, La Viola couldn’t add to their tally and Bayern reached the final.
A tight contest in the other match was lifted with Steed Malbranque’s goal on the stroke of half-time, simply sumptuous freekick from the corner of the box, lifted over the wall and into the back of the net on the near side. Some fine work from José Bosingwa down the right-hand side allowed him to whip a cross into the far post for Raúl Meireles to head in an equaliser to ensure the spoils were shared going into the second leg.
Robbie Keane scored his 25th goal of the season here with a cool finish, showing that you don’t need to blast the ball to score, Tottenham now sitting pretty knowing that Porto needed to score twice to progress. A moment of madness, however, from Didier Zokora left them in a spot of bother. Zokora was shown a straight red card on the brink of half-time, his second of the season, after catching Malkhaz Asatiani with his elbow, referee Stuart Dougal showing no hesitation in sending the Ivorian off. However, Porto were unable to even pluck out an equaliser, let alone a winner and Tottenham progress.
FC Bayern (4) 2 - 3 (4) Fiorentina << FC Bayern advance on away goals
Porto (1) 0 - 1 (2) Tottenham

Final
Bayern were utterly ruthless in the final, showing no mercy to Tottenham in a 3-0 demolishing, all of the goals coming in the first half courtesy of Luca Toni and a brace from Miroslav Klose. The lack of defensive cover in the midfield really cost them and Kevin-Prince Boateng had his work cut out trying to fill-in in Zokora’s absence, indeed getting himself sent off in the 79th minute for a second bookable offence.

https://preview.redd.it/itis2karrfd51.png?width=844&format=png&auto=webp&s=7d0c4d4a8dc0081c25d84af5d35b3e46dea10924
Miroslav Klose’s two goals in the final means he takes home the Golden Boot with 12 goals, edging out RC Lens’ Aruna Dindane and team-mate Luca Toni by one goal. Riccardo Montolivo of Fiorentina picks up the Playmaker Award with 8 assists.
Champions League
Now, for what you’ve all been waiting for – the Champions League!
We left you with the Quarter Final line-ups:

Get ready for mayhem...
None of the teams would disappoint in this round either. Liverpool beating Real Madrid 2-1 away in the first leg only to almost throw it away with a 2-1 loss at home, thanks for Raúl’s 90th minute goal. Liverpool may well have been questioning just why the final whistle hadn’t already blown, but Jamie Carragher would be the extra time hero though, scoring a scrappy goal after a corner was failed to be cleared by Madrid.
Inter Milan’s first leg away goal helped them on their way to beating Man Utd over two legs, Adriano powering home from an indirect free kick opportunity. Paul Scholes would level the tie up when they met again in Italy, but former Arsenal man Patrick Vieira would seal the tie for Inter with a wonderful 30-yard screamer into the top corner.
A contender for match-of-the-competition as Arsenal overcame Barcelona in a 10-goal feast. Thierry Henry’s sub 5-minute brace against his former club, including one after just 18 seconds, was pegged back by Robin van Persie’s own brace and the Gunners would lead 3-2 at half-time thanks to “wonderkid” Nicklas Bendtner. Bendtner would be at it again shortly after half-time, thanks in part to even more craftsmanship from Francesc Fàbregas. A headed goal from William Gallas at a corner put Arsenal 5-2 up and looking comfortable but Barcelona went on the attack the corresponding kick off, Xavi Hernández sliding Ronaldinho in to make it 5-3, Jens Lehmann going walkabouts by all accounts.
Bendtner would complete has hattrick on 70 minutes though, slotting home after a neat turn in the corner of the box, sending Andrea Barzagli to another dimension. Barcelona would secure their 5th away goal though, Thierry Henry completing his own hat-trick after William Gallas failed to deal with a ball over the tip. Final score 6-4. And breathe.
The second leg was less entertaining, but Thierry Henry would put his former club to the sword again with two more goals and, despite Rafael Márquez being sent off for an astonishing elbow to Bakary Sagna’s face, Barcelona held out for the win on away goals. 2-0 on the night, 6-6 on aggregate. The most disgraceful part of the night was the players surrounding referee Thorsten Kinhöfer after the red card. Pundits are still perplexed as to what they were complaining about.
Finally onto Celtic, who produced the most breath-taking First Knockout Round ties against Valencia would continue to produce high entertainment value against PSV. Celtic held the advantage after a 1-1 draw in Eindhoven, but PSV would not go down without a fight. Rodrigo Palacio opened the scoring after Scott Brown needlessly lost the ball and some poor play from goalkeeper Artur Boruc, less than 45seconds into the match. Maciej Zurawski would dig his goalkeeper out of a hole 3 minutes later, beating Heurelho Gomes at his near post before Rodrigo hit back again on 8 minutes, capitalising on another poor error from Artur Boruc.
John de Jong would add to icing to a rich and wholesome cake, flicking the ball into the far corner of the net beyond Boruc’s reach and PSV looked comfortable leading 4-2 on aggregate, knowing Celtic now needed 3 goals to progress. PSV would lose key midfielder Edison Méndez to injury on 27 minutes but it would take until the second half for Celtic to take advantage, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink finishing off an attack before Maciej Zurawski would set up a frantic last 5 minutes after getting on the end of Lee Naylor’s inch-perfect cross. Celtic couldn’t produce one more moment of magic though and the tie would finish 4-4 on aggregate, PSV going through by virtue of away goals.
Real Madrid (3) 2 - 2 (4) Liverpool
Man Utd (1) 1 - 1 (2) Inter
Arsenal (6) 0 - 2 (6) Barcelona << Barcelona advance on away goals
PSV (4) 3 - 3 (4) Celtic << PSV advance on away goals

Semi Finals
Could the Semi Finals produce the same magic? Liverpool were paired up against Inter Milan and Barcelona were drawn against PSV.
Barcelona all but ended PSV hopes of an underdog victory, smashing them 4-0 in the first leg at home, Thierry Henry and Ronaldinho both scoring braces, Ronaldinho’s both coming from penalties (and both when Henry was on a hat-trick so he can probably consider himself unlucky to be allowed to take one of them). With Edison Méndez still missing, Sebastián Battaglia was asked to step in but he was easily over-run by the Barcelona midfield.
PSV showed incredible fight immediately in the return fixture, going 2-0 up inside the first 7 minutes through Palacio’s lob and Ismael Aissati’s smart finish, but Barcelona soon calmed everything down, scoring 4 unanswered goals in return before half-time courtesy of Barzagli, two from Henry and a brilliant Ronaldinho free kick.. Gastón Fernández scored again late in the second half, but with the tie already done and dusted, it was more for pride than anything else. Barcelona win 4-3 on the night and 8-3 on aggregate.
Liverpool hosted Inter Milan at Anfield for the first leg of the other semi final and took a first half-lead through a stunning John Arne Riise free kick. Steven Gerrard forced Júlio César into an own goal after initially saving Ryan Babel’s long-range effort before Fernando Torres turned provider for Ryan Babel to breakaway and make it 3-0. Zlatan Ibrahimović gave Inter Milan some hope with a late away goal, pouncing on a rare error from Jamie Carragher in the 88th minute.
Liverpool were in good form going into the return leg, having battered fierce rivals Man Utd 4-0 at home at the weekend but it was Inter Milan who dominated this game for long periods, really putting the Liverpool team to the sword. Their dominance paid off in the 21st minute when Ibrahimović retrieved Maicon’s pinpoint pass and slotted into the bottom corner. Torres would ease the pressure on Liverpool with an equaliser at the start of the second half, his 20th goal of the season passed into the bottom corner; the keeper probably should’ve done better with it though. Inter claimed offside, but I’m not convinced.
Incensed, Inter went on the attack immediately, both literally and figuratively, injuring Torres before Ibrahimović fed Adriano who had the vision to pick out Esteban Cambiasso to restore Inter’s lead on the night. A great counterattack. Inter would make Liverpool pay once more for sloppy defending when Steve Finnan was beaten to the ball too easily by Adriano who cut it back for Maxwell to fire home. Pepe Reina will be disappointed when he looks back on that, as he really should be saving those kinds of shots. 3-1 on the night and unbelievably 4-4 on aggregate.
Extra time beckoned but Adriano was not interested in penalties, whipping a delightful ball around the corner for his strike partner David Suazo, clean through on goal to slot past a helpless Reina. Liverpool would go all out offensive from then until the final whistle but couldn’t muster one last goal to salvage the result and Inter go through to final, 4-1 on the night, 5-4 on aggregate.
Liverpool (4) 1 - 4 (5) Inter
Barcelona (8) 4 - 3 (3) PSV

Final
And so for the final. Inter Milan vs Barcelona. The world held high hopes after the last few rounds: they wanted goals.
They were not disappointed.

Strong.
Barcelona opened the scoring on 23 minutes, emerging “wonderkid” Lionel Messi slotting Samuel Eto’o through to score his 20th goal of the season. The lead wouldn’t last too long though, as Ibrahimović fed Suazo to equaliser on 31 minutes. Eto’o would restore the lead again soon after, Deco sliding a lovely pass through the defence for Eto’o to bury.
Controversy followed in the second half. Xavi loses the ball to Maxwell inside the Inter half who in turn goes on a mazy run towards goal exchanging passes with Cambiasso along the way. He is allegedly obstructed by Zambrotta outside the penalty arc, but replays show that it’s a blatant dive. To make matters worse, the referee inexplicably gives a penalty! Ibrahimović slots it without question. 2-2.
63 minutes and Puyol is needlessly dragged out of position to close down Stankovic who instead slips in Ibrahimović for his second of the game. Minutes later, a poor throw-in from Zambrotta gifts the ball to Ibrahimović to seal his hat-trick and put the game to bed, Inter holding out for a 4-2 win in the final against Barcelona!

Despite the result, Ibrahimović would finish runner up to on 14 goals to Thierry Henry and Rodrigo Palacio in the Golden Boot race, the latter pair netting 15 goals a-piece. Andrés Iniesta would take home the Playmaker Award with 8 assists ahead of team-mate Ronaldinho’s 7. Despite an average rating of 7.83, Ronaldinho would also finish runner-up to Ibrahimović in the Champions League best player, with Henry rounding off the top 3.
Now, because does not save an accessible history of stats and results, they are essentially wiped as the season ends, so I decided to end each 4th game file on June 1st. The game resets around about the 24th or 25th but I wanted to stop the game after the season had finished and before any international competitions began.
But the year is 2008 so we all know what’s coming…

https://preview.redd.it/77mkbzd5sfd51.png?width=890&format=png&auto=webp&s=2b0d8ccafdf04b8dc03fdc1204ea9a21df93e15b
This does mean I’m going to have to go into the game file for Year 2, but I’ll keep everything else a secret. Euro 2008 deserves to be inside the 07/08 season.
I do have all the results for the other international tournaments akin to this which make up the Confederations Cup competitors, so I will give a very brief oversight into those as well as they happen.
I’m not going to go into how each team qualified for the tournament unless you specifically ask about it in the comments. Let’s look at the groups, with the help of some expert MS Paint skills to display their current world rankings too.

https://preview.redd.it/gjbu0xo6sfd51.png?width=275&format=png&auto=webp&s=a4f9acbbe0a8ab7fba779689c4137c37b137793c
The most notable changes are that Denmark, England, Scotland and Finland all qualified for this edition and Spain, French, Russia and Poland, who all qualified in the real Euro 2008, miss out. Hosts Switzerland and Austria naturally have terrible ratings due to not playing many competitive internationals as they didn’t need to qualify for their own tournament. Group B looks tough, and the Scots may well fancy an upset in Group D.
Editors predictions: England. Not just because I’m biased, but because on paper they have the squad to do it. The Golden Generation may not have succeeded in real life, but this is stats-based fantasy. Football’s coming home! Failing that, and with France and Spain both missing, it’s anyone’s to take. I’m putting money on a Ronaldo-backed Portugal.
I will run through them Group by Group, even though it won’t strictly be in the order. All will be well again come the Knockout Rounds.
(editor note: a picture of all the groups is at the bottom. I had to cut back to 20 images)
Group A
Croatia and Sweden played out an entertaining 2-2 draw that didn’t get going until the last 30 minutes. Jurica Vranjes thought he’d snatched a late 87th minute for Croatia until Marcus Allbäck equalised 2 minutes later. Two early goals for Denmark were enough to see off Switzerland despite themselves pulling a goal back before half-time, a 2-1 finish.
The second round of fixtures produced even more drama, a Tranquillo Barnetta hat-trick for Switzerland helping to sink Sweden 4-3 in a back-and-forth game, Gelson Fernandes eventually settling the contest for the Swiss. An Eduardo-inspired Croatia took the game to Denmark and a late Nicklas Bendtner goal wasn’t enough to stop Croatia winning 3-1.
Any win for Croatia against Switzerland sends them through. A draw would also suffice. Switzerland need to win, although a draw would do if Sweden could beat Denmark. Any positive Denmark result paired with a Croatia win sees them progress, or even a win and a Croatia/Swiss draw. Sweden must beat Denmark and hope Croatia win. If the Swiss beat Croatia, they need to win and hope for a goal difference swing.
Drama all round as Sweden’s tournament hopes end with a 2-1 defeat to Denmark. Switzerland know they realistically need to win but can only muster a 2-2 draw with Croatia.
Denmark top the group, Croatia are runners up.

Group B
Czech Republic and Austria open the tournament with an entertaining 2-2 draw, Austria snatching a 90th minute equaliser through Steffen Hofmann after a mistake from Zdenek Grygera. Turkey and Portugal would step it up a notch by playing out a 3-2 game which, in truth, Portugal were always in control of. 3-0 up inside 21minutes, Turkey made a second half comeback but the 2nd goal in the 89th minute was too little, too late.
Goals from Deco and Tomas Rosicky in the first half ensured the spoils were shared in a game where the Czech Republic dominated Portugal for large portions of the game and will be disappointed to only draw 1-1. (editor note: the game seems to think Portugal completed 200% of their crosses in this match…) Turkey, on the other hand, turned their dominance into a 2-0 win over Austria.
Portugal need to beat Austria to secure top spot whereas Austria know they need a big win and some good fortune for a draw in the other game. Any winner of Turkey/Czech Republic will qualify, but a draw for Turkey should be enough, barring a miracle from Austria. It’s feasible that Portugal could still be knocked out, though very unlikely.
And as it happens, Portugal make light work of Austria, Maniche and Cristiano Ronaldo scoring first half goals to seal the tie 2-0 in an otherwise boring match. Czech Republic would be made to pay for not getting the winner against Portugal, being torn apart comprehensively by a relentless Turkey side with braces for both Nihat and Halil Altintop, 4-0 the final score line.
Portugal top the group, Turkey are runners up.

Group C
The last group to get going, but no lack of entertainment here, with Romania cruising to a 2-0 win against Greece. All of the drama came in the much-anticipated England/Germany match though and it met all expectations. Darren Bent’s headed opener was cancelled out by Miroslav Klose pouncing on Paul Robinson’s fumble, but Wayne Rooney would restore England’s lead halfway through the first half. Bayern’s Lukas Podolski pulled it level again before half-time before the teams seemed set to see out a 2-2 draw. However, deep into stoppage time at the end of 90 minutes, up steps David Beckham to do what David Beckham does best – dispatch freekicks into the top corner. 3-2. There was still time after the restart for Steven Gerrard to be shown a straight-red for hacking down Klose with two-feet.
Germany would take their revenge out on Greece in the next game, securing a 4-2 victory, whilst England would maintain their good form by persevering for a late 2-0 win against Romania.
England are already through and Greece cannot qualify so their final game is a dead rubber, other than Greece trying not to finish bottom and England trying to assure top spot. The winner of Germany/Romania will go through, but a draw will be enough for Germany by virtue of Goal Difference.
England consign Greece to 4th place in the group with a routine 2-0 win, goals from Wayne Rooney and Shaun Wright-Phillips enough to see them off. A cagey first-half in the Germany/Romania match became a much more open-ended affair after Daniel Niculae’s brilliant 47th minute opener, a sublime solo run culminating in a lobbed finish. Miroslav Klose fired back 10 minutes later with 2 goals in quick succession to swing the tie but Romania, not prepared to lie down, equalised again through Eric Bicfalvi. Romania would do the unthinkable though, Adrian Mutu bending a delightful goal into the corner to secure a 3-2 victory for Romania.
England top the group, Romania are runners up.

Group D
Italy kicked off the group against Finland with a nervy win, having gone 1-0 down to a 60th minute penalty from Ari Nyman. Filippo Inzaghi pulled it level in the 82nd minute before Antonin Cassano’s stoppage time winner stole all the points from Finland. Scotland were less keen to roll over though and will be disappointed to have thrown away a 3-1 lead at the 85th minute, Wesley Sneijder and Roy Makaay with late goals to snatch a 3-3 draw.
Holland vs Italy was billed as the one to watch in this group, and rightly so, both teams amassing almost 30 shots between them, but with both keepers in good form, the match would be tied 1-1, Riccardo Montolivo cancelled out Robin van Persie’s first half strike. Scotland have certainly found their shooting boots at this tournament after putting 4 past Finland, but they were made to work for the victory with the Finns taking the lead and later equalising through Mika Ääritalo’s brace. James McFadden’s strike would retake the lead before Barry Ferguson put the icing on the cake of a 4-2 win.
Scotland need any result against Italy to go through. A loss through, coupled with a likely Holland win overly Finland, would send them crashing out. Finland cannot progress. Holland must win to go through, as must Italy.
Holland do indeed get their win against Finland, dominating from start to finish, although the score line should really have been bigger than 2-1. Scotland’s hopes of sneaking out of the group were dealt an immediate blow as they went 1-0 down to Alessandro Del Piero’s header inside 45 seconds. Alberto Gilardino would double the lead in the 20th minute and although Kenny Miller pulled one back in the second half, they couldn’t find a second goal to escape the group. Final score 2-1 to Italy.
Italy top the group, Holland are runners up.

Quarter Finals
Turkey – Denmark
Croatia – Portugal
England – Holland
Italy – Romania
No real humdingers here as all of the teams tightened up a lot.
Turkey did away with Denmark 2-0 in a game that the Danes will be disappointed to have not scored in. Nihat and an own goal from Per Krøldrup sealed the game.
Portugal were perhaps the better team in their tie against Croatia but still had to work hard to secure a 2-1 victory, Eduardo’s first half strike cancelled out by Maniche and Ronaldo in the second.
More late, late drama in this one as Frank Lampard scored a trademark goal, arriving from deep to sweep home a Wright-Phillips cross. England must’ve thought that’d be enough but Robin van Persie struck early into stoppage time to level the tie up 1-1. But cometh the 94th minute, cometh the man: Holland do not deal with a long clearance properly and Wright-Phillips skips past his man on the wing to lay the ball into the path of the onrushing Lampard who buries it high into the far corner. Holland complain to the linesman but really, they should be looking at themselves for some shoddy defending.
Romania will be disappointed they had to take Italy all the way to penalties to beat them, having been arguably the better team throughout. 1-1 at full time but a comfortable 4-2 shootout victory as their excellent tournament marches on, the only sour point being Stefan Radu’s 121st minute red card for a horrific tackle on Antonio Cassano.
Turkey 2-0 Denmark
Croatia 1-2 Portugal
England 2-1 Holland
Italy 1-1 Romania << Romania advance on penalties
Semi Finals
Turkey – Romania
Portugal – England
One thing guaranteed in this tournament now is that there will be an outsider in the final. Turkey left it late, but a brace from Nihat would prove enough to put Romania to the sword and end their dream run. Romania might look back and feel like they could’ve done better with both goals though.
Manchester United teammates Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney did battle in this one, both getting their names on the scoresheet with clinical finishes. There would be nothing to settle the two sides until the very end: penalties. Hugo Viana, Nuno Valente, Jorge Andrade all scored whilst Gareth Barry, John Terry and Steven Gerrard did likewise. After Miguel fired home, Michael Carrick would see his penalty saved by goalkeeper Ricardo. However, some Paul Robinson heroics against Ricardo Carvalho gave Rio Ferdinand a chance to get back into the shootout. The pressure was too much though, and he slammed his penalty against the inside of the post to see Portugal through to the final, a final which Deco will miss with suspension after hacking Wright-Phillips down with two feet in 120th minute for an early bath.
Turkey 2-0 Romania
Portugal 1-1 England << Portugal advance on penalties
Final
No Third Place Playoff in the Euros, straight into the final where Turkey meet Portugal, looking for an upset. Nihat and Mehmet Aurélio’s persistence forced the breakthrough on 20 minutes but a smart short freekick routine 2 minutes later from Portugal saw Maniche hit a bending daisy cutter into the bottom corner to equalise. Into the second half and Mehmet Topuz played one of the balls of the tournament from deep, around the defence and into the path of Nihat who didn’t need to break stride to hit an unbelievable shot on the half-volley. Rumour has it that Nihat lost Ricardo Carvalho so well, he is still searching for Nihat to this day. Turkey would hold on to their 2-1 advantage until the final whistle to become unlikely European Champions 2008.

And so that concludes the first season back of Reasons Why I Still Play FM08, also unofficially called What Could Have Been.
This grew to be significantly longer than I expected, and I thoroughly enjoyed writing it, even if it did take me well over 15 hours to do so.
If anybody has any specific questions about any aspects of this particular game, please feel free to ask and I’ll do my best to answer them, whether it’s information about non-league clubs, club finances, world rankings, wonderkid regens etc.
I will also happily run through competitions like the African Cup of Nations and the Olympics, although competitions like the Asian Cup, Gold Cup, Copa América have yet to happen on this file.
I have at least 5 seasons worth of game files now, and seasons 2-5 are all structured the same in terms of save dates: September 1st, December 1st, March 1st and June 1st.
Congratulations if you got this far, I applaud your perseverance. I hope you enjoyed it. See you soon for Year 2.

The Bride vs Olga of Kiev submitted by Mavikartal2003 to ERB [link] [comments]

2020.04.04 14:57 peculi_dar I signed up for a mail-order bride service, but now they won’t stop sending strange women to my house

Now, before you judge me, let me explain a few things. I am a man in my late forties just looking for some company. I already did things the way they’re supposed to be done. Fell for a girl in college, married her, had kids, the whole lot. Lived the life of a perfectly average family man until the day I came home to find Nancy, my now ex-wife, screwing some random guy on our kitchen counter. The same counter she had me wipe down every night after I helped cook dinner for the last twenty-five years of my life.
And I was still willing to work on it after that, I really was. Nancy, however, had other plans. So there I was - a divorced middle-aged man, eating TV dinners alone every night. My two daughters dropped by every week at first, then their visits trickled down to once a month, and now they were just so very busy with their extracurriculars and college entrance papers. No one needed me. No one wanted me.
I was not in a great state of mind when I first searched that pathetic string of words. Countless websites popped up for those seeking live-in companions, aka “mail order brides”. Eastern European, Asian, and African girls all dying for me to bring them over to live the American dream. I didn’t know where to start, how to choose. I went for the agency that bought an ad at the top of the search list.
It was all pretty straightforward. They wanted me to sign up for a monthly subscription plan. For $20 a month, I could peruse thousands of profiles and video call “lonely women who were just dying to meet a mature, successful man”. Most of the women looked like prostitutes, dolled up and wearing skimpy dresses. Several uploaded suggestive videos of themselves pouting their lips. I could never choose someone like that. Not with two teenage daughters. They would never forgive me.
Maria from Kiev was different. She only had two plain photographs and a short description in her profile, but there was something authentic about her first message to me.
Hello, I am Maria. I want get to know you better.
The bad English didn’t put me off. I was thinking it could actually be a good thing. Maybe I didn’t want a woman who could use the power of language to put me down. I hit the “request video call” button right away, and we had our first call minutes after that. There wasn’t much to see on the blurry, lagging video. Maria was a frail thirty-two-year-old woman with short curly hair and sad eyes. Something about her obvious malnourishment appealed to me. Western women didn’t know what the hell they wanted in life. Nothing seemed to make them happy. Here was a woman who desperately needed food; a problem I could actually fix.
A week later, I picked Maria up from the airport. There was something about her photos and our short video call that implied she was uncomfortable in front of a camera. Now, I saw that Maria was actually incredibly awkward in real life as well. She was the tiniest woman I had ever seen. Stick thin and dressed humbly in a frayed knitted sweater and oversized corduroy pants. Her face was skeletal, something the pictures and blurry webcam had failed to capture.
“Uh, hello,” I bellowed in my cheeriest voice, “Welcome to the United States!”
Maria nodded once, darting a quick glance up at me before looking back down to her worn, leather shoes.
“Do you have any luggage? Uh, bagazh?” I’d had a week to look up some basic words in Maria’s language.
She shook her head no. This stumped me because obviously the woman needed clothes and other things I didn’t have on hand. I hadn’t thought that getting a bride from abroad would be so much like getting a pet. I would never adopt a puppy without buying it some food, a set of brushes, etc. Perhaps, I reasoned, I could ask my ex-wife to lend us some of my daughters’ old things until I took Maria shopping. Their preteen clothes would probably fit.
Maria didn’t speak a word on the car ride over, and I didn’t push her. She was probably experiencing some sort of cultural shock. When we got home, I led her into the kitchen. I’d gone out of my way to roast a chicken for the occasion. I’d read several articles that claimed Slavic men rarely cooked or did chores, and that women like Maria found it charming when a civilized western gentleman cooked for them.
“Here we go,” I beamed, taking the massive chicken out of the oven, “I bet you’re starving after your life. Uh, I mean flight.”
Maria’s eyes grew wide at the sight of the roasted chicken, and she began sniffing at the air eagerly. It was a little odd, but it pleased me to see her face come to life. I piled plenty of food on her plate and set it down on the table. Maria darted a glance at the food, then back to me, tilting her head in anticipation.
“Well, uh, dig in,” I said, gesturing toward a seat at the table, “I’ll fix myself a plate too if you don’t mind. Haven’t had anything that wasn’t takeout in a while.”
I turned to the cabinets for only a second, but when I turned back, both Maria and the plate of food were missing.
“Maria?” I cried out into my silent house, “Maria, where did you go?”
There was no reply, but I thought I heard a noise coming from my living room. The shock had worn off and I was starting to feel some real dread creeping up my spine. A part of me just wanted to run out of the house and call the police, but that felt too excessive. I had to give Maria the benefit of the doubt. Maybe there was a cross-cultural explanation? Perhaps in Ukraine they only ate in their living rooms? That was probably it, I reasoned, as I left my kitchen.
It took me a few seconds to locate Maria’s tiny frame behind the couch in the far corner of my living room. She had her back to me as she hunched over something on the ground. Based on the excessive guzzling noises, it was probably the missing plate of food.
Maria from Kiev was barking mad.
No, literally. She began barking and growling at me as I approached. Her beady, expressionless eyes bulging as her fanged teeth chomped at the air, sending bits of chicken in my direction.
That was it for me. I ran the hell out of my living room and up the stairs, locking myself away in the master bedroom. I got my phone and pulled up the agency’s website. They had a phone number on the contacts page, and within minutes I was listening to a woman with a thick accent reciting a standard business greeting.
“Hello, my name is Darold Shaw and I am one of your clients,” I hesitated, trying to find the right words to describe my predicament.
“How can vee help you?” the woman asked.
“My bride, Maria, arrived this afternoon, but there is something very wrong with her. I don’t know who to call for help.”
“You are unhappy vif bride Maria from Kiev, yes?”
“Not that I’m unhappy, I mean, it’s not like that,” I gripped my head. Jesus Christ, this wasn’t a faulty blender complaint. There was an insane woman in my house.
“No worry, Mr. Shaw, vee send new bride,” the voice on the other end replied.
“What? No!” I exclaimed, but the line was already dead.
I stared at my phone, trying to figure out how I would explain this entire ordeal to the police or ambulance. Was Maria even legal? Did she have any documents? I hadn’t seen any.
That’s when I heard scratching at my bedroom door. I froze on the bed, but the scratching grew louder, a low whine accompanying it. I was just about to call 911 when the doorbell rang. Maria reacted right away, her barks growing distant as her tiny hands and feet scampered downstairs.
Was it possible that the agency had called someone on my behalf?
I looked outside my bedroom window. There were no patrol cars to be seen, but the cops could have come in an unmarked vehicle. Even if they weren’t cops; even if it was just Gary, my idiot next-door neighbor, I decided I could really use some company in dealing with the whole barking bride situation.
I grabbed my revolver and headed downstairs. I was less terrified of Maria now that I was armed, so I braced myself for whatever messed up scene awaited me. Maria, however, was nowhere to be found when I reached the front door.
The doorbell was still ringing.
“Hello, I am Ksenia from Vologda,” a stunning, tall blonde greeted me as soon as I opened the door, “I here to replace Maria from Kiev,” she added in a deep, sultry voice.
I did not know what to say. My mind had turned off as other, less frequently used body mechanisms kicked back into gear after years of stagnation. Ksenia smiled a dazzling, pearly-white grin as she walked inside my house, shutting the door behind her. I did not think it possible for anyone to walk so gracefully in high heels, but Ksenia’s narrow hips were pure art as they wriggled around my hallway in a very short, skin-tight purple dress.
“Very nice big house,” she purred, “Big man, big house, wot else is big, ah?”
I could have forgotten all about the agency mix up. Forgotten the current political climate, stock market, year, my birthdate, you name it. If Ksenia revealed herself to be a praying mantis after my own head, I would be okay with that too. At that moment, I was willing to do anything to get that gorgeous Russian girl in my bed.
Maria had other plans, however. She let me know by sneaking up behind me and biting down on my left ankle, hard. I screamed, stumbling back and tripping over a loose floorboard. I fell flat on my back, dropping the revolver on my way down to the floor. Ksenia picked it up and pointed the gun at Maria.
“You filthy suka!” Ksenia screamed at Maria, “No vonder he ask for replacement, you freak!”
Maria snarled, lunging at Ksenia’s feet, pulling off a stiletto and scampering upstairs with the shoe wedged in between her teeth.
“Not my Louis Vuittons!” Ksenia shrieked, before turning to me in a fury, “How can you just lie there? Why you not help me?” my blonde bride demanded, waving the revolver around as she took off her other shoe.
“I’m sorry,” I said, standing up slowly, my eyes glued to the gun, “I fell because Maria bit my foot.”
“Wot you do about her? You just let her stay?” Ksenia demanded with her hands at her hips; a stiletto in one, my revolver in the other. Just then, the doorbell rang again.
I didn’t want to open it, but Ksenia moved swiftly.
“Hello, I am Svetlana from Izhevsk,” a petite middle-aged woman stood in my doorway. Svetlana was dressed casually in jeans and a loose sweater; her auburn hair pulled back in a neat, conservative bun. My third bride’s face was incredibly serious as she surveyed the scene in front of her. The resemblance to my ex-wife was uncanny, and I had to do a double-take to make sure it wasn’t actually Nancy faking an accent.
“You complain about me to agency?” Ksenia raised her voice - and my gun - again. “You ask them replace me with HER?”
“What, no!” I exclaimed, backing away from both of the women, darting a glance behind me to make sure Maria wasn’t lurking around, waiting to bite my other ankle.
“Devushka, uspokoites, pozhaluysta,” Svetlana said to Ksenia in a condescending, matronly sort of way as she stared at my second bride’s exposed thighs. Ksenia mumbled something back, self-consciously pulling the skirt of her dress down. Svetlana said something else in brisk Russian, which caused Ksenia to hand over my revolver. Svetlana examined the gun before sliding it into one of her back pockets.
“The other one is upstairs?” she asked us matter-of-factly, and we nodded in sheepish unison, “Ok, I go get her.”
I grabbed my phone as soon as Svetlana disappeared from view. Enough was enough; the woman had my gun for crying out loud. I was just about to unlock the screen and dial 911, when Ksenia put her delicate hand on mine, shaking her head. Her sky blue eyes were wide with fear as she raised a finger to her lips before drawing close.
“Not time for that. We leave right now,” she whispered. There was true urgency in her voice as she shuffled her bare feet on my welcome mat.
“Don’t worry, I’ll get the police,” I whispered back, raising my phone.
“You not understand,” she hissed as panic-stricken tears welled in her eyes, “That woman not with agency! She not even woman.”
“What did you say, Ksenia?” Svetlana’s cool voice sounded at the top of the stairs. I turned to see her calmly gliding down the steps. Maria trailed behind on all fours, keeping low to the ground and whimpering slightly.
Svetlana stopped a short distance in front of us, her sharp eyes inspecting us with disdain. An urgent fear began to knot at my stomach. I stole a glance at Ksenia, who was all but cowering at my side, slowly edging her way toward the front door, pleading in Russian. Maria howled, running to stand in front of me, as though protecting me from Svetlana.
I was too slow to react. I was still trying to process the little things like Maria’s barking, Ksenia’s terrible English, the Goddamn resemblance between Nancy and Svetlana. I was half-convinced I’d gone mad. You have to understand, it was impossible to take any of it seriously. I really wish I had, though. Maybe then I could have prevented what came next.
Svetlana moved fast, drawing and cocking my revolver, pushing me out of the way as she walked up to Ksenia and grabbed her long, bleached curls with force. The shot came seconds later as she blasted Ksenia’s brains all over my hallway wall. Maria whimpered at my feet as Svetlana released her hold on my blonde bride’s lifeless body. Ksenia’s corpse fell to the floor with a thud.
“I feed now,” Svetlana announced, giving me a small smile as she wiped her blood-stained hands on the sides of her jeans. “Please take the meal up to the bathroom. I eat there.”
“Wha?” I croaked, trying to remember how to speak.
“Take the body to the bathroom,” Svetlana snapped back, turning aggressive. “I go to eat. Then we will discuss our marriage, ok?”
Well, I did what I was told. What else could I do?
I had not known Ksenia long, but a deep sense of remorse washed over me as I carried her youthful, limp body in my arms. She had been a gorgeous, young woman, who had died needlessly within half an hour of entering my home. I kept my eyes in front of me as I walked, not looking down to see the mangled mess that was once Ksenia’s beautiful face.
Svetlana watched me place the body in my small bathtub. She nodded appreciatively and licked her lips as she beckoned me to leave her alone in the bathroom.
“Do not even try calling the police or escaping,” she threatened, “I have not fed in a long time, and I’ll be happy to make seconds of you,” her accent grew weaker with every new sentence, and I remembered Ksenia saying that whoever - or whatever - Svetlana was, she wasn’t actually a bride from the agency.
Maria and I sat together in my kitchen, trying to ignore the sickening noises coming from the bathroom upstairs. I never knew that the sounds of tearing flesh and crunching bone could be so loud. I felt like I had no options in the matter. I could call for help and risk dying, or I could face Svetlana and… What? Also risk dying? I burst into sobs then, fear and misery washing over me as mucus spilled from my face. Maria rushed over, nosing her way into my arms and onto my lap. She was so small and light. I had to stop her from licking my hands and face though, it was a little too much. Still, I appreciated the comfort.
The doorbell rang.
I hesitated, waiting to see if the thing that claimed to be Svetlana from Izhevsk would react, but the feeding noises continued, so I decided to take a chance and see who was at the door. You’re probably thinking it was another bride, but no. It was actually my next-door neighbor, Gary. I’d never been so happy to see that stupid, pudgy face of his in my life.
“Hey Darold,” Gary beamed, lifting a six-pack of Stellas in the air, “What do you say, bud? How about us two lonely old bastards watch the game?”
“Uh, what game?” I asked, trying to figure out if I could get Gary to call for help without Svetlana finding out.
“Does it matter?” he laughed, “There’s always some game on, isn’t there? Oh, and who is this? Hello ladies!”
I turned around to see Maria and Svetlana standing behind me. Svetlana wore the same sweater and jeans as before, only they appeared spotlessly clean. How had she gotten rid of Ksenia’s blood?
“Darold you old dog, aren’t you going to introduce us?” Gary demanded, smoothing the three strands of hair that covered his bald spot.
“Uh, Svetlana, Maria, this is my neighbor and friend, Gary,” I said, not knowing what else to say or do, “Gary, this is Maria from Kiev, my uh, fiancé, and Svetlana…”
“Svetlana from Izhevsk, Russia,” the thing-woman flashed Gary some teeth as she reached out a hand, “Maria’s cousin.”
“Ah, very nice,” Gary said, taking Svetlana’s hand in his, hesitating a moment, then planting a sloppy kiss on it.
“Well, are you going to let me in, Darold? You’re acting mighty strange. These ladies have you all riled up?” Gary howled with laughter as Svetlana joined in with a false, polite chuckle that chilled me to my core.
I considered stepping aside to let my neighbor in, but hesitated as I remembered the blood spatter decorating my walls and floor. Svetlana was two steps ahead of me.
“Actually, Gary, I was just about to leave these two love birds to themselves,” Svetlana smiled, “Maybe you and I could have some beers at your place?”
Just like that, I was left alone with Maria and a large puddle of Ksenia’s blood. I considered calling the cops, but there was no way to explain it all away. Where was Ksenia’s body? Where was the gun that killed her? I could see it now. Too many questions; too many suspicious glances thrown my way. I just wanted things to go back to normal.
I considered calling the agency about Maria from Kiev, but the possibility of them sending over yet another bride was more than I could handle. Besides, what would they do with Maria? Would they send her back home? What sort of disturbing life had she come from that made her so canine?
Maria mostly walks upright these days, and though she doesn’t speak in any human sort of way, she lets me know what she needs through body language and growling. She can tell the barking disturbs me, so she’s been trying to do less of that. Obviously it’s not the same as having a real wife, especially in the bedroom, where I have to keep her off the bed or she starts tearing up the pillows.
Haven’t seen Gary since that fateful day. The police came by to question Maria and me recently, but I said we hadn’t seen him in weeks. Maria nodded silently, confirming my story. The whole time the cops were in my home, I was nervous they would make note of the freshly painted walls or the needlessly large welcome mat that covered most of the floor in my hallway. They seemed to just be going through the motions, though.
So it’s been a peaceful sort of life, for the most part. I did get that doorbell taken out though. It was giving Maria and me some major anxiety. I also can’t stand to be around my ex-wife anymore. I mean, I haven’t relished in her company since the divorce, but ever since meeting Svetlana, I can’t help but wonder. That uncanny physical resemblance, the strict, disciplinary manner, the similar fashion sense. That slight, devilish sneer Nancy sometimes flashes me through the car window when she brings the girls by for a visit.
I don’t know.
It’s probably nothing.

2019.12.18 17:57 Shemptacular Your favorite/least favorite show of the decade per corps

Offseason shitpost time. What are your favorite and least favorite shows of the decade from each corps? Speaking mainly from a design standpoint, as each of these performances were pretty top-notch.
The Academy
Fav: By a Hare, 2017. Drum Corpse Bride is the obvious answer, but I found this show more fun, with a better brass book, and I'm a sucker for cartoon stuff.
Least: Piano Man, 2013. An interesting concept that just didn't pan out in the design dept.
Bluecoats
Fav: The Bluecoats, 2019. Kinetic Noise, Downside Up and Tilt are great, but this show felt like a culmination of the corps' whole decade and is IMO the best arranged show musically of all time.
Least: Unmasqued, 2012. Really interesting musically and well performed, but the whole package with the voiceovers didn't deliver for me.
Blue Devils
Fav: Metamorph, 2017. Felliniesque is one of the best shows/performances ever, but Metamorph hit harder for me.
Least: As Dreams Are Made On, 2016. It's Ghostlight but not nearly as good.
Blue Knights
Fav: Because…, 2015. The best of the BK "series" that started with That One Second in 2014. The final effect with the flags going behind the mirrors still gives me chills.
Least: i, 2017. This one was hard, because there aren't many weak shows for BK this decade, but this one had to be it for me.
Blue Stars
Fav: Where the Heart Is, 2014. This is how an anniversary show is done. The blueprint motif, the corps unison vocals for "Home," and the final setpiece of the new family are all fantastic.
Least: ReBourne, 2011. In a decade of great Stars shows, this one is just ok in my opinion.
Boston Crusaders
Fav: Revolution, 2011. I might get flak for this, but this show easily eclipses Wicked Games/SOS/Goliath for my favorite of the 2010s.
Least: Quixotic, 2016. Apologies to the keyboard player, but I've never been a big Man of La Mancha kind of person.
The Cadets
Fav: Side x Side, 2013. Some absolutely insane musical moments here. Weird props though.
Least: Promise: An American Portrait, 2014. I think what killed this for me was that all the voicing was pre-recorded (IIRC).
Carolina Crown
Fav: Out of This World, 2014. What they started in 2013, they knocked out of the park in 2014. Visually, musically, all over this show slapped.
Least: It Is, 2017. I feel that a lot of the things they tried in this show design-wise, they did better in 2018 and 2019.
Cavaliers
Fav: Mad World, 2010. Looking back, a show that was very ahead of its time. IMO should have won that year.
Least: Game On, 2015. Young corps that was completely hamstrung by a less-than-great show design.
Colts
Fav: "And A Shot Rings Out: A Johnny Staccato Murder Mystery", 2015. An incredibly cheesy, cornball show that's over the top with radio voice acting and singing and I loved every minute of it.
Least: Dark Side of the Rainbow, 2014. Interesting concept and nice performances by the "lead characters," but the musical arrangements were just ok, especially when Great Gig in the Sky would be completely blown up two years later.
Crossmen
Fav: The In-Between, 2018. Fragile is a close second, but the musical depth in this show edges it out.
Least: Above and Beyond, 2015. I think the visual package killed it for me. I can't get over the paper airplane.
Madison Scouts
Fav: Reframed, 2012. The "Madison is back" show. Great music that echoed Madison's history, and that Great Gate of Kiev rotation.
Least: Last Man Standing, 2017. The Mad Max aesthetic is cool, but the musical selections just didn't showcase the corps' strengths enough.
Mandarins
Fav: Inside the Ink, 2017. The show that should've gotten them to their first finals.
Least: Prophecy, 2012. Key Poulan is absolutely hit or miss for me. His piece Prophecy is a miss.
Phantom Regiment
Fav: Juliet, 2011. An all-timer for the corps, classic to its bones.
Least: This New World, 2018. Thank you Will Pitts.
Santa Clara Vanguard
Fav: Ouroboros, 2017. Edges out Babylon just barely. Great featured ensemble performance, innovative props, and that Send in the Clowns ending stinger.
Least: Les Miserables, 2013. I think I'm in the minority here, but I'm ok with never seeing another Les Mis show in DCI.
Spirit of Atlanta
Fav: Sin City, 2012. Best of the trilogy from 2011-2013, and pure entertaining SoA.
Least: Out of the Ashes, 2015. The staffing turnovers/turmoil really showed.
Troopers
Fav: The Road Home, 2011. Deserved to make finals. An incredibly warm sound from the corps, and beautiful brass writing that highlighted it.
Least: Duels & Duets, 2017. Coming a year after Relentless, the bar was set real high for Western-themed shows. This might have just been unfortunate timing.
(I haven't seen enough of Genesis, Surf, PC, Music City, or Cascades to have clear favorites yet).

2019.11.01 21:14 LuckyBahstard Name of TV show with 4 moms competing? Tuesdays @ 10pm in Kyiv

Привіт! I just spent a week and a half in Kyiv with friends (colleagues). Forgive me, as I am also asking in the Kiev subreddit but I really want help on this.
Edit: still unsolved :( despite a great guess below.
One friend says she shamefully watches a competition of 4 moms -- a stupid-funny tv show. I need to know what it is so I can tease her. She won't tell me the name. It's in Russian language and is shown on Tuesdays at around 10pm (and more often maybe). Help me please. :)
Будь ласка! This is obviously very important. :D
Дякую! Гарного дня!
edit: I just learned of чотири весілля but I'll assume that's not it, because it has brides and not moms? And it's in Ukrainian.

2019.06.13 19:12 RepresentativeAlong Suggestions for Flavor Events: Russian State

Gold in the Cold – Alexandre Prigogine, an expert mineralogist, has discovered a deposit of valuable minerals in Siberia. First, he unearthed a large collection of kimberlite, a telltale sign of diamonds. Not long after, he found the desired jewels themselves. Companies and prospectors are travelling from all corners of Russia in the hopes of expanding their businesses and wealth. The question is: Do we have our own state-run cooperations take control over the newly-created mines, or do we give autonomy to the enterprising businessmen in the area?
(For anyone wondering, this is the real life Mir mine, located in the Sakha Republic, and constructed in the late 50s. In Krasnacht, the mine is founded in the late 40s. The idea is that Alexandre Prigogine and his family return from their exile after the Soviets are defeated in the civil war. His expertise in mineralogy greatly helps Russia in her diamond-hunting endeavors, meaning that the mineral resources of the region are discovered a decade earlier than in our timeline).
If the state takes control over the area, you gain a stability boost, a national spirit that gives a minor resource bonus and a single civilian factory. Letting the businessmen act independently, however, damages your political power and party popularity, but the national spirit gives a major resource bonus and you gain two civilian factories.
The Existentialist Hour – In memory of his friend, the late great Lev Shestov, philosopher Semyon Frank has established a grand pub in Saint Petersburg. Centered around the theme of intellectual thought and literary critique, “The Existentialist Hour” has been created with the help of poet Mikayil Mushfig. Mushfig has shown interest in establishing a similar bar in his native Baku. The pub appeals to the youth with alcohol, companionship and discussions. Though the general populace has shown little interest towards the endeavor, students and academically gifted youth are ecstatic about its creation.
Gives +5 political power.
The Big Bang Theory – George Gamow, a well-known physicist, has recently published a controversial research paper. Based on a hypothesis by Catholic priest Georges Lemaître, the paper argues that the universe was created through a sudden explosion of energy in primordial space. Though the theory does not necessarily stand in juxtaposition to the existence of God, many interpret its contents as highly atheistic. The Orthodox Church is outraged by the paper’s sacrilegious implications. Some factions within the church are demanding that we ban it from public view. Others are demanding that Gamow revise the paper, and that he must use the theory to argue for a strong theistic position. We may also leave him be.
Leaving Gamow alone will result in an impactful loss of political power and stability, but will increase your reputation with democratic nations. Down the line, this can result in a profitable trade deal with the Scandinavian countries and Non-Aligned Movement. Forcing Gamow to revise the theory will result in no changes to stability or political power, at the cost of lowering foreign relations with democratic states, as the government’s actions are viewed as totalitarian. If you ban the paper outright, you gain a major boost to political power and stability. Gamow will flee to Sweden in protest of the government’s censorship, giving the Swedish tiger and her allies a research speed bonus. This will greatly lower relations with democratic states.
Orenburg Sex Scandal – An increasingly dramatic series of events have occurred in the city of Orenburg. Alexander Schmorell, the trusted medical aide of governor Paul Nazaroff, was caught sleeping with the governor’s wife, Anna. Schmorell has been in the news before, when he refused to change his German last name. This audacious move caused the Vozhd to exile him to Siberia. At the behest of Nazaroff, a personal friend of Schmorell, he was pardoned after a few years and allowed to return to the clinic where he worked. Because of their friendship, the affair is seen by many as a horrific betrayal. Gossip has spread around the city, and the state-controlled media can do little to control the dissemination of politically compromising information.
This event will lower political power and stability.
In response to the scandal, two choices are available to the player. First, the high echelons of the NRPR can force Nazaroff to give an official press statement regarding the situation. He urges the people to stay away from his personal life, and to let him resolve the situation on his own terms. Schmorell will flee the city before anyone can catch him, and Nazaroff will divorce his wife. This lowers political power but gives a moderate stability boost.
The second option is to have Schmorell, Paul and Anna quietly disappear before the rumors can become truly widespread. A new governor will be appointed after a crisis meeting in the Orenburg NRPR. This will give a minor stability and political power boost.
Levitov’s Marriage – Today the church bells rang in Feodorvskaya Church in Saint Petersburg, signifying the holy union between husband and wife. Mikhail Levitov, companion of the Vozhd, has married singer Tamara Toumanova in an ornate wedding. The ceremony was initiated by Alexander Hotovitzky, a close friend of both Levitov and the Vozhd. The choice to pick such a quaint member of the church baffled many, but all who attended were greatly charmed by the elderly priest. The church was jam-packed with politicians, military men, foreign leaders, and the Vozhd himself. The Black Guard and many security officers were present, often hidden among the crowd, watching the situation intently. Outside, thousands of loyal NRPR members waited for the couple to exist the house of God. The groom was dressed in a dark suit with a purple shawl lapel. The bride wore a fabulous white dress adorned with hundreds of red rubies and orange sapphires, and she came equipped with a gorgeous purple lipstick. Several people were trampled and wounded during the zeitgeist following the newlyweds’ exit from the church, though no casualties were reported. Foreign press has started reporting about the grand event, with Mrs. Levitov’s dress becoming a symbol of Russian greatness and extravagance.
Gives +70 political power.
Strike up the band! - Today in the Kiev countryside, festive music was heard. Upon closer inspection, it turned out that a concert was being held. The Rural Exiles band is composed of American musicians who were forced to flee the continent both during and after the civil war. They have become very popular in the Ukranian countryside. Based around the themes of country living, farming and religion, their music has struck a chord with many agrarian Slavs. Vocalist Bill Monroe and guitarist Simeon “Blind Simmie” Dooley stole the spotlight, many said, with their on-stage banter. Local NRPR administrators have endorsed and financed the musicians, ensuring that more shows are on their way.
Gives 2+ stability.

2019.02.25 21:53 icecoolsushobhan [Biweekly Geopolitics Thread] Afghanistan complains to the UN, the fate of ISIS brides, and the story of Golda Meir

Welcome to this week's edition of the Biweekly Geopolitics Thread, your place to discuss all the latest events from around the world on IndiaSpeaks. Discussions can be about any event from anywhere in the world - be it sports, fashion, or of course, politics. Topics do not have to be related to India. Here are some of the top stories to get the discussion started:

Top 3 stories from India's neighbourhood:

1. Attempted plane hijack in Bangladesh
A Bangladeshi national, about age 25, allegedly attempted to hijack flight BG147 from Dhaka to Dubai, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing in Chittagong. Security forces stormed the plane and killed the man, who was found to have a pistol, according to official reports. All other passengers successfully disembarked the plane. The exact reason for the attempted hijack is unclear, but Reuters reported that the man was mentally unstable and wanted to talk to PM Hasina, who was visiting Chittagong.
2. Afghanistan complains to UN about Pakistan
The Afghan government shot off a strongly-worded letter to the UNSC about Pakistan's role in the ongoing peace dialogue with the Taliban, objecting to being cut off from the process entirely. The government claimed that Pakistan's role in the dialogue was a violation of the country's sovereignty and the need for an Afghan-led peace process. Matters came to a head when news circulated about representatives of the Taliban meeting Pakistani PM Imran Khan (often called 'Taliban Khan' for his soft corner for the group), a clear violation of UNSC sanctions that forbid members of the group from traveling.
  1. Saudi sisters stranded in Hong Kong
Two Saudi sisters have been left stranded in Hong Kong after authorities revoked their passports. The girls have alleged that their life under Saudi Arabia's strict custodianship laws (which forbid any woman from so much as going outdoors without a male relative) was akin to being born into a prison. They saved money over years and, when the family was holidaying in Sri Lanka, attempted to flee to Australia to seek asylum. They were caught in transit in Hong Kong when Saudi authorities revoked their passports, and have been stuck in the city-state for six months. Once their period of visa-free stay ends, they may be deported back home, where they allege their lives are in danger from their brothers and father. The girls have also announced their renunciation of Islam, which is punishable by death in the kingdom.

Top 3 stories from around the world:

  1. King Jong-Un boards train for Hanoi to meet Trump
In a style characteristic of his late grandfather and founder of North Korea Kim Il-Sung, Chairman Kim Jong-Un boarded a train to reach the Vietnamese city of Hanoi for his second summit with US President Donald Trump. The journey could take up to 60 hours, with China locking down cities along the way to ensure their ally's security, as the custom-made train with bedrooms and conference rooms winds through the Chinese heartland. Reuters reports that he will stop at the Vietnamese border and drive the rest of the way to Hanoi, where authorities have planned a grand welcome in the fellow Communist nation. At the summit, the two leaders are expected to take stock of efforts to denuclearize North Korea, a move for which Trump has regularly claimed the Nobel Peace Prize.
  1. Nigeria holds election amidst reports of violence
After having to delay the vote for a week citing logistical issues, Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, finally held a national election to elect a new president. Although 70 candidates are on the ballot, the two leading candidates are incumbent Muhummadu Buhari, the 76 year-old former military dictator of the country, and businessman Atiku Abubakar (72). Observer groups have reported 39 deaths related to the election in the country of nearly 200 million people. Interestingly, the incumbent President Buhari spent five months undergoing unspecified treatment in Britain, during which time news circulated that he had died and was replaced by a Sudanese body double. Eventually, he had to deny these rumours of being cloned.
  1. ISIS bride Hoda Muthana denied return to the US
In November 2014, Alabama, US resident Hoda Muthana abandoned her family to join the terrorist group ISIS in Syria, during which time she allegedly used social media to encourage others to 'spill American blood'. Since then, she has been married thrice, with all her fellow jihadist-husbands having been killed in battle as the group is blown nearly out of existence. Now, living in a refugee/POW camp in Syria, she has expressed interest to return to the US and rejoin her family with her 18-month old son. US President Donald Trump categorically and publicly (on Twitter) denied her permission to return, although Muthana claims that she regrets her decision to leave. Her family is said to have filed a case against the US government to bring their daughter back. European countries are also facing a similar dilemma of returning ISIS fighters and brides, with the UK having stripped one of them, Shamima Begum, of citizenship, although London Mayor Sadiq Khan and opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn have condemned the move.

Geopolitical History: Golda Meir

A new segment bringing alive great events and people from history who changed the world
It is an unfortunate fact that few women have led major countries in the world, and even fewer have been remembered. However, standing with the likes of Margaret Thatcher and Indira Gandhi as fellow 'iron women' who showed strong leadership in their countries, is the fourth and only woman PM of Israel, Golda Meir. Born in Kiev in Imperial Russia, she immigrated to the United States in 1906, and in 1917, after marrying her husband Morris Meyerson, moved to British-mandate Palestine with strong Zionist zeal. She returned to the US some years later, but became embittered after President Roosevelt and most other leaders chose to turn their backs on European Jews being persecuted by the Nazis.
In 1946, she joined discussions with the US on the UN Partition Plan for the Palestinian Mandate and helped raise funds for what became the state of Israel in 1948. It is said that days before Israel was established, Meir traveled undercover to meet King Abdullah I of Jordan (then called Transjordan) to request him to stay neutral in the inevitable war on the new state. When the King asked her to not hurry in her quest for a Jewish homeland, she is said to have remarked, "We've been waiting for 2,000 years. Is that hurrying?" She was later one of the 24 signatories to the Israeli Declaration of Independence, a historic moment for the Jewish people.
In 1969, she was elected Prime Minister of Israel after having served in several prominent cabinet-level positions, and retained that position till her resignation in 1975. In her term, she oversaw several crises: The Munich Olympics massacre, where Palestinian terrorists killed Israeli Olympians; the Austrian hostage crisis, in which Jews returning to Israel via Austria were kidnapped by Palestinian terrorists; and perhaps the most serious of them all, the Yom Kippur War of 1973, an invasion launched by a coalition led by Egypt and Syria to take back Israeli-occupied Sinai and Golan Heights. Under Meir, Israel emerged victorious at Yom Kippur, and entered into the Camp David Accords, which led to the first Arab country (Egypt) recognizing Israel, and eventually leading Egypt to exit the Soviet sphere of influence.
Golda Meir was also PM during the 1971 India-Pakistan War that led to the creation of Bangladesh. Although the country condemned the genocide of Bengalis in East Pakistan, it did not supply any support to India in the form of money or weapons. At that time, India was in desperate need of mortar weapons to arm Mukti Bahini. Despite the fact that India did not have formal relations with Israel, Indira Gandhi's secretary and one of the architects of the 1971 war, PN Haksar, used his secret networks to convince Israel to sell the arms to India, with the ultimate green light coming from Meir herself. She wrote a now-immortalized letter, hoping that Indira Gandhi would appreciate the help Israel was providing. Of course, it was only in 1992 under PM PVN Rao that India finally established diplomatic relations, and in 2017 under PM Modi that an Indian PM finally visited the homeland of the Jewish people.

2018.09.10 11:02 Satansonoflaw Guest perspective- church and banquet hall wedding

So my brother got married in May over in Canada and I thought I’d finally write a guest perspective. I thought their wedding was really lovely and went really well so I thought I’d share.
Guests: 74
Ceremony: 3:30pm
Cocktail hour 5pm
Dinner: 6:30
Venue:
A ukranian catholic church attached to a banquet and conference centre. The church was beautiful and modern and having it attached meant there was no need to travel between the two, just a simple walk down the hall which was very convenient. My brother opted for an open bar which was well loved but respected, not many people got absolutely smashed which was a pleasant surprise. Everyone was just jolly.
Ceremony:
I now know why people do a rehearsal beforehand haha. None of us knew what we were doing which made for hilarious panicked conversations as the bride, her dad and us bridesmaids all had semi panicked whispered conversations “how fast do we walk, are we walking with a groomsman? What if I end up sprinting down there”. The ceremony was really lovely, a simple catholic one with no mass. It was much shorted than I expected given that it was in a catholic church (was maybe 20 minutes?) but I thought it was a really nice length of time. The priest performing the ceremony had a great sense of humour and gave guests an opportunity to take photos during the ceremony which was really nice.
Now one minor flaw in the ceremony was at the end, the music was having technical issues and ended up not working so there was no exit music for the bride and groom but the priest just made a joke about it, everyone laughed and he got everything moving after about a minute or two of awkward waiting. It was handled really well so it was probably one of the only things that didn’t go well from my perspective.
Something that the bride’s brother did that people might not have thought of (I know we didn’t) but ended up being really nice was he set up his phone next to the alter and just left it recording a video. There was a small stand with flowers next to where they were standing for the ceremony and he just propped his phone up without anyone knowing so now my brother and his wife have a close upvideo of their ceremony. They didn’t think they’d want or need video of anything but it was a cute little thing to have.
Post ceremony/cocktail hour:
Probably the only thing I think that could have been handled a bit better was there was about 45 minute between getting out of the ceremony and getting access to the reception area attached to the church. It meant we got to take photos outside but it also meant all the guests sort of milled around watching the photos. Could have been a bit more organised? But everyone had a nice time and I was busy with the family photos.
Food:
Amazing, there were passed Hors d'oeuvres which were really nice, the bar was open and the dinner was 4 courses. Salad with a vinaigrette, pasta with a cream sauce, chicken kiev, and ending with a tuxedo ice cream desert thing. The only quibble with the food aspect was just a funny encounter with the staff. My partner (one of the groomsmen) has an allergy to nuts and fish so when we asked the staff what was in the hors d’oeuvres the answer we always got was “it’s Spanish”?
I suspect they didn’t speak English as their first language because there was nothing Spanish about the food and that doesn’t answer the question! But we all just had a laugh about it, I know a few other guests with allergies got the same semi hilarious reaction to their enquiries as well but no one was too upset.
Reception:
After dinner there were the speeches which were very well done and emotional. After this we turned to the dance floor. The bride and groom each had a dance with their parents (motheson and fathedaughter) and when that was done they had their first dance as a married couple then the dance floor opened up. Everyone joined in for the first few songs but then the dance floor fizzled a bit. Until the glow sticks came out. My parents had ordered tons of glow sticks of different sizes from amazon kind of by accident and decided to keep them and they were a hit. The room was dark enough that the glow sticks worked really well and they completely revitalised the dance floor. The kids loved them and they were a great way to get us “older kids” out there too. At one point someone turned the sticks into a pole and there was some limbo on the dance floor going on.
The reception was really relaxed and lots of fun with the right amount of dancing/chatting for my tastes. The dance floor itself kept getting very hot so everyone would periodically spill out onto the patio that was attached which was really convenient. Everyone could wander outside, chat and chat up with people they hadn’t spoken with yet then go back into the dance floor.
Favours:
I was involved in making the favours so I may be biased but I thought they were really cute. Each person got a small paper box with 2 Lindt chocolates in (various flavours). We also had custom water bottles with the name of the bride and groom + their date on the labels. We figured though the bar was free it would be nice to have cold water and that way people could take them home/to their hotel rooms at the end of the night at the bar. They all went down really well with the guests.
Ideas I’m taking going forward:
Glow sticks – these were an absolute blast and made for some great pictures at night.
Water bottles – Simple and practical and I know I definitely used some the next morning

2018.05.25 18:10 whyshouldyouwakeup I am a sad lonely man

This was my header on a Russian mail order bride website. As it turns out you don't just pay for the bride and shipping costs, first you get to know someone from the thousands of chicks (and guys! albeit I personally wasn't interested...) and see where you wanna take it. Some girls want a serious husband, some a visa that they're willing to earn ;) and various other arrangements. This obviously isn't a tutorial on how to get a bride but I figured I'd get this out of the way for those of you not familiar with the sadder parts of the internet.
In my profile I mentioned my wife- ex wife, keep forgetting the ex. she didn't leave me for my questionable morals if that's what you're thinking; she simply died. I won't get into to many details but I will say she left me with 6 children ranging from the ages of 3 to 14. three years later my oldest child James jokingly says I should order a bride, little does he know I'm just desperate enough. No sane lady wants a widower with kids ,and so one night when all the kids were out on sleepovers and what not, I sat down with a bottle of scotch and did just that. I didn't put a profile picture just in case, and wasn't expecting much to be honest since that's the number one sign of a fake profile.
After a couple days I checked back in and saw four letters have been sent to me, two were clearly copy pasted and felt very insincere, one accused me of being fake, and the last took me for a ride.
This woman, prettier than every other girl on this site by far, wrote me a letter about her home life and how she must escape her uncle, and in order to do that she must leave Ukraine. Now I don't believe everything I'm told but this seemed too detailed to just be a gold digger looking for a green card. I massaged back "do you have skype" so we could talk things out. A couple hours later she answered "sometimes" with her user name (she was very active on this website but she didn't frequent skype much for reasons you're about to see). Even then I knew better than to immediately call and I asked when can we talk, she answered quickly "call in 3:55 hours not before dont be late" I had to cancel a gig but this was more important so when the time came I called.
The woman who answered looked just close enough to her profile picture but deferent enough for me to be caught off-guard. Her eyes were sunken in and looked so very tired, dry lips, bruises that didn't quite heal... it was bad. Her English wasn't good but I still asked questions "how far are you from help" is what my dumbass self chose to ask first, she said she lives in a small village 3 hours away from Kiev and there's no one to help her there, she stressed I was her last chance before I heard a door shut. She quickly said "no more time" and in her effort to quietly shut the laptop she didn't quite close it. I couldn't see anymore but I could still hear. Her uncle (I assumed), was yelling at her and she started crying, sounded like she was pleading with him but I wouldn't know since I don't speak Ukrainian. It felt like hours while I was listening in on this when suddenly I heard a gunshot. A few moments later a man opened the computer, I managed to think quickly and put my thumb on the camera before he could see me but he still took his finger to his mouth and said "shhhh" before disconnecting.
That was three months ago. Her profile on the website was deleted and she's never connected to skype. I saved her profile picture so I reverse photo searched it and found out she's been missing for over a year. I thought of contacting the authorities but honestly, those moments after the gunshot were real quite, doubt there's anyone to find anymore. That man's face is blurred in my memory now so I have no way to help, in the article it states she's believed to be dead, a belief as good as any. At the bottom of the article there's a massage from her parents begging for anyone to help find her, guess I did...
Her name was Julia and I was her last chance, as they say, біда.

2018.05.07 08:32 goneharolding [Support] [TW: sexual abuse] Dad went completely insane

I’m not exaggerating when I say he is completely and utterly crazy. According to all sources he was always awkward and needy, we suspect he might be on the autism spectrum but, being born in the early 50s, was never diagnosed. About 25 years ago when I was a kid, he converted to Wicca. That in itself is just kinda eccentric, but it’s only the tip of the iceberg.
He’s been saying for years that he’s going to live forever, “and it’s worked so far!” This started out as a joke, but somewhere along the line it ceased to be a joke. He has believed for years that he communicates with dragons that live in the volcanoes around the world. That he is an immortal wizard who can control nature and other people.
This is upsetting enough. When I was little, he was my best friend. My parents divorced when I was in kindergarten and after that we were never the same. Over the next 20 years I watched him drift further and further into a fantasy world, but an eccentric, lonely old man is tragic but manageable.
then he got remarried, to a much younger lady who ran off a couple years later and left him with their infant daughter, R. For the next decade he limped along as a parent, with help from me and an old friend, C. The apartment was moldy and R development asthma. He let her eat whatever she wanted and she was diagnosed diabetic at eight. (They are both insulin-dependent diabetics.) In 2015 Child Protective Services took her away, what exactly the final straw was I don’t even know. Eventually I had to choose between my sister and my own child, and I left for his and my sanity’s sake, leaving the tough and capable C to keep an eye on her.
But in the past three years we have learned about what he managed to hide from us for those years. Turns out it was so much worse than dirty clothes and a messy home. First, she developed a seizure disorder because of old head trauma. Then she started compulsively going to hardcore BDSM websites and uploading stuff, apparently looking for a dom (or possibly just sending them to him, it’s hard to know.) Mind you, she was 12. Long story short, in an apparent attempt to fill the gap in his love life, he groomed her for years to be his own personal little fucktoy. Since being placed with C as a foster parent, she has been diagnosed with Antisocial Personality Disorder, commonly called a sociopath. She is sickly and may never be able to live on her own.
Meanwhile he shows up to court with cat shit on his jacket, flies to Kiev (from the US) to find a bride but comes back alone, manages to convince a shrink that it’s all made up and he’s really the victim, and doesn’t mention a damn thing to me. If not for C and our middle sister, I would have no idea that anything was even wrong.
He has been officially diagnosed NPD with histrionic and authority defiance characteristics, all of which were on full display last week when he attended (with a supervisor) R’s school play. He became fixated on another girl, going on and on about how lovely and striking she was. If that’s not creepy enough, he apparently held my 14-year-old sister’s hand as long as they were together, stroking and caressing it like she was his girlfriend.
I am terrified of fantasies because his have eaten him alive. I can’t seem to convince myself that men are not all selfish sexual beasts (culture doesn’t help much!) I am heartbroken for my little sister, impotently furious with him and devastated by the whole thing. He still looks and sounds like my innocent first love, but I don’t know this person.
Now he is being evicted from his apartment. His drivers license was taken away a couple years ago and he has alienated almost everyone he knows. He has sent me three messages fishing for my address but I haven’t spoken to him in almost three years. But a deep little part of me cries desperately for Daddy, and can’t understand any of this. I was seeing a therapist who I liked but wasn’t very helpful. I have two sons and a husband I need to be able to relate to. Tonight I made my sweet husband very angry with projection and crying.
I’m at a loss, RBN. Thanks for reading, and for your understanding.

2016.11.28 23:35 1stworldview123 Do mail order bride really exist?

Do mail order bride really exist?
The answer is Yes, and No, it really depends on your definition of mail order brides.
The historical roots of the mail-order bride industry that emerged in the 1800s in the American frontier: European American men found financial success in the migration West, but the one thing that was missing was the company of a wife. Very few women lived there at this time, so it was hard for these men to settle down and start a family. They attempted to attract women living back East; the men wrote letters to churches and published personal advertisements in magazines and newspapers. In return, the women would write to the men and send them photographs of themselves. Courtship was conducted by letter, until a woman agreed to marry a man she had never met.[9] Many women wanted to escape their present way of living, gain financial security and see what life on the frontier could offer them. Most of these women were single, but some were widows, divorcees or runaways.
During most of the 20 century, the mail order bride continued with the main method of women putting themselves in catalogs. Then men would view the women's profile, then for a fee order the women address. These became the main order bride companies business method in the 20 the century, with the fall of the Soviet union and cheap airfares, these companies spread from Asian to Eastern Europe, mainly now the Ukraine
Today most women do not leave their countries to escape poverty but to seek a man they believe will be a good husband and provider, that is family orientated and that looks at women with more respect than in many countries around the world.
With the advent of the intent, the mail order bride industry boomed into a billion dollar industry, Now with a few pictures and website, anyone could be in the mail order bride business. With hundreds of ma and pop shops opening over the last two decade, Most who were clients of one of the three original mail order bride companies, A Foreign Affair (AFA), Anastasia and EC, The owner of ForeignLadies.com met his wife while working on a tour from loveme.com, A Foreign affair still today in the largest in the industry, each week they offer tours to one of a dozen countries China to Peru and everywhere in between. The industry grew so fast in 1998, Senator Cantwell of Washington state introduces legislation to regulate the mail order bride industry. and a new law Called: "International Marriage Brokers Act" or IMBRA was born. With stiff regulations, many companies like Anastasia moved from Bride business to Fantasy Chat.
Although the industry strongly objects to the term mail order brides, saying there is no difference if man in New York courting a woman from California through match.com, then courting a woman from Russia. Critics like the Terra Justice Center has a different out look, saying these men take advantage of women oversea. But studies have contradicted these statement and show abuse is actually lower in these marriages. See "International Marriages - A Report to Congress"
So why do thousands of women join these site: Elena Kosalova of the Ukraine says, "Men here are not serious about family, they expect women to stay home while they go out each night with their friends and drink. I want a man who s serious, mature and who wants to be with his wife and family. I have met Americans in the past and they seem more reliable and mature." Elena rejects the idea she is a "Mail Order Bride"
Why do men seek a mail order bride: James Goodwin, 43 of South Carolina says, " I meet women here all the time, but I just can not find the values I am looking for.. I have dated here for more than 20 years, After three days in Kiev, I was shock at how many beautiful women I met that I would consider marrying, now I am just trying to reduce my options and pick the right one. It truly is the fastest way to find a beautiful sincere women.
So what is the cost, the cost can range greatly from site to site and from type of service, AFA or loveme.com offers everything from letter writing, tours and executive services for the rich and famous. As little as $12 to as much as $25,000. The owner John Adams say's the best way is just go over and meet then women, avoid letters and never waste money on expensive chat. You can meet up to 1000 beautiful women in just 10 days, it will be the greatest vacation of your life. Joe Nail of ForeignLadies.com, has stayed with the traditional Letter Writing, Each letter is $7.50 and but say they do plan on offer some limited chat option.
Many sites like,foreignwomen.com, PhilippineSinges.com, and UkraineSsingles.com, that offer simple unlimited membership for $29 per month. These type of site also target pacific regions, like Asia, Latin America or Eastern Europe.
There is also a site for mail order grooms; SingleMenOnline.com, that caters to men publishing their photos in hopes to meet an American Bride.
James Dunn, who is a ghost writer for review sites says "You get what you pay for. Membership sites to do not screen the members at all. so you never know who you really are writing, The big boys require the women to apply in person in one of their local offices. The companies that offer group tours will introduce you to hundreds of beautiful women, for the cost of $1000 to $3000 depending on location, about the same you would pay for any vacation. Several companies also do individual tours these can range from $750 to $1500, But only arrange one to one introductions, Always make sure they are biased in the USA or EU, Most of the complaints come from small agencies that are desperate and need to make as much as they can from you. Just a note, if the company is based in an a foreign country you will have no recourse if they do not follow through.
So do mail order brides exist, If you belive a if a woman is a mail order bride if she lives in another county then Yes, But if you believe it just another dating option like any on-line dating site, matchmaker or dating service, than No. . It really seems like a doubled standard in the world, If a women meets a man in Italy or France, then oh that is so romantic, but if a man meets a women in Philippines, than ....

2015.04.28 21:07 Acaicus Introducing /r/MailOrderBrides

No, this is not a joke. There was a thread about mail order brides here in this sub a few months ago and I got interested in this topic and decided to test the waters. I'm 26 y/o, so I am not exactly in a rush to get married, but since I haven't had a girlfriend yet, I'd like to prepare a way out for myself when I hit 30.
Ok, so I registered at AnastasiaDate.com, filled in my profile info and uploaded a couple of photographs of myself. Additionaly, I paid a couple of hundred $$$ to be able to message the girls. I sent out about a dozen messages to different girls and waited. Nothing. Some of them marked my messages as read, but not a single one replied. Ok, so I chose another girl for a live chat. I asked her where she's from. She said Kiev. So I told her that I could come to Kiev and take her to dinner. Her response was "maybe, but I can't promise anything". Then I was outta credits.
Lesson I learned today is that not even girls which are desperate to get out of their war torn country are willing to let me buy them dinner.
This is fun. I'll share my further wife hunting adventures at /MailOrderBrides for those who are interested.

2014.03.06 23:28 rLeagueOfIreland 2014 League of Ireland Season Preview [Premier Divison, Teams 5-8]

-Home---PD(1-4)---PD(5-8)---PD(9-12)---FD(1-4)---FD(5-8)-
We've split this season preview into six parts. Use the navigation tab at the start or end to cycle through the posts.

The Clubs

Many redditors helped to write pieces on their clubs. The full list of writers is available here. Thanks to all who helped.

Premier Division (5-8, Derry City, Drogheda United, Dundalk, Limerick)

Crest: Image
Kit: Home
Ground: Brandywell Stadium, Derry, Co. Derry (7,700)
Manager: Roddy Collins
History:
Derry City Football Club are the League of Ireland's only club from the north of Ireland, where they play their football at Brandywell Stadium in Derry. The club was founded in 1928, and at first played in the Irish League, in Northern Ireland. In 1971, security concerns related to the Troubles meant matches could not be played at the Brandywell. Despite security forces withdrawing their objections to the use of the Brandywell, the Irish League inisisted that the club play their matches elsewhere. This ultimately lead to the club's withdrawal from the league. After 13 years in junior football, it joined the League of Ireland in 1985. The Candystripes were expelled from the League of Ireland in 2009 when it was discovered the club had been using secondary unofficial contracts with players unbeknown to the League. They were then later reinstated a number of weeks later and demoted to the first division. The club won a domestic treble in 1988–89, and again won the league in 1996-7. They have won 5 FAI Cups, the most recent being in 2012, and 10 League Cups making them the most successful team in that competition.
2013 Season:
Declan Devine's second season in charge of Derry City began brightly, the team challenging for the top of the table as young midfielder Barry McNamee won April's Player of the Month award and Rory Patterson scoring the goals which would lead him to the leagues top goal scorer award for the season. However, the season didn't end as it began and City had to settle for 4th place in the table, leading Devine and the club to part company in November.
2014 preview:
The 2014 season brings with it a new manager for Derry, as Roddy Collins was given a one year deal and immediately told the fans he plans to win the league. European football will also be an added bonus for the new manager. The dubliner has made several changes, releasing no less than 13 first team squad members and signing 8 players so far. Former Scunthorpe captain Cliff Byrne has been brought in and should prove key to any success this year along Rory Patterson, who has become the clubs most valuable asset with his goals.
Key players:
Rory Patterson (FW)
Patrick McEleney (DF)
Defensive partnership of Ryan McBride and Cliff Byrne (DF)
Ones to watch:
Ryan Curran (FW)
Michael Duffy (MF)
Crest: Image
Kit: Home Away
Ground: United Park (Hunky Dorys Park), Drogheda, Co. Louth (2,000)
Manager: Robbie Horgan
History:
Founded in 1975 with the amalgamation of the two Drogheda clubs. Known as the Drogs, the Boynesiders and the Turks. The club has strong links with Tranbzonspor in Turkey in recent years due to the sharing of club colours and crest which stem from the association of the Ottomon Empire sending aid to Drogheda during the Irish potato Famine. The team Had very limited success for the most part of the clubs existence and regularly went between promotion and relegation from first division to premier. Best years in 00s winning FAI cup, 2 Setanta cups, the Premier Division and competing in the Uefa Cup and Champions League preliminary rounds, narrowly losing out to Dynamo Kiev 4-3 on aggregate in 2007. Followed by a bad financial spell narrowly avoiding financial ruin, the club recovered to finish 2nd in 2012 and win the League cup for the second time in the clubs history.
2013 Season:
Poor league season following on from the strong 2012 performance only managing an 8th place finish. Drogheda became very much a cup team competing and losing in the finals of the Setanta Cup, League Cup and FAI Cup. Most heart breakingly in a brilliant game to a last minute winner in the FAI cup final against Sligo Rovers, losing 3-2.
2014 Preview:
I'm living abroad now so am not in touch with the team as much as I would normally be. Mick Cooke the manager of the club for the last 3 relatively successful years following the near demise of the club is no longer with us, to the surprise of many. We have lost a few good players including Drogheda native Ryan Brennan to Shamrock Rovers. A core of the team remains which is promising, but honestly do not know what to expect following the change of management and loss of some good players in key positions, particularly midfield.
Key Players:
Record top scorer Declan 'Fabio' O'Brien (FW) is still our man to watch along with Gavin Brennan (MF) the new captain.
Crest: Image
Kit: Home Away (Yellow)
Ground: Oriel Park, Dundalk, Co. Louth (4,500)
Manager: Stephen Kenny)
History:
Dundalk, or 'The Lilywhites', are only behind Shamrock Rovers in the amount of trophies won. They have recorded the honour of the League of Ireland and the FAI Cup titles 9 times each, the most recent successes being in 1995 and 2002, respectively. They have played in Europe against the likes of Liverpool, Celtic, Ajax and AC Milan. Dundalk's current spell in the Premier Division since 2009 has brought ups and downs, including playing in the Europa League and coming within 2 play off legs against Waterford United of being relegated back to the first division.
2013 Season:
After sacking manager Darius Kearns after a poor 2012 season which saw the club come so close to relegation, Dundalk took on former Derry City and Shamrock Rovers manager Stephen Kenny to coach the side. The club immediately saw an upturn in results, surprising everyone in the league. Dundalk sported a highly respectable away record which helped them challenge St. Patrick's Athletic for the title for most of the season, eventually finishing second, ahead of 2012 champions Sligo Rovers.
2014 Preview:
Stephen Kenny has strengthened the Dundalk squad for the upcoming season, as well as holding onto some crucial players. The club look forward to playing in the Europa League again and will expect to challenge the top 3 in the league again to cement their status as a European club.

History:
Limerick Football Club is a football club based in Limerick. They won the First Division in the 2012 season and thereby gained promotion to the Premier Division. They have been called at different times Limerick, Limerick United, Limerick City and Limerick 37. Limerick won the League of Ireland title twice, in the 1959-60 and 1979-80 seasons, and the FAI Cup twice, in 1971 and 1982. They also won the League of Ireland Cup three times, 1975–76, 1992–93 and 2001-02. The club has competed in European competitions on six occasions, meeting teams as Real Madrid and Southampton.
2013 Season:
In what could only be described as a mediocre, the final match resulted in a shock 6-0 loss to Derry. They will certainly be hoping to push on from their 7th place finish with the target undoubtably being a top half finish.
2014 Preview:
Limerick will approach the new season with a sense of cautious optimism, as the Munster-based club have made some great signings, with the likes of Oji and Carel Tiofack coming into the squad. The biggest signing however was new club captain Shane Duggan signing early in the new year. They will no doubt be looking for an instant impact from him as the recently announced Dave O'Leary would be leaving the club.
Key Players:
Shane Duggan (MF)
Craig Curran (FW)
Samuel Oji (DF)
