2020.10.22 02:40 Falstaff_Infection LONG POST AHEAD: My Star Wars Campaign

Hey all. Below I have a VERY LONG summary of the Star Wars FATE campaign I've been running for the past few months during COVID. If anybody is kind enough to take the time to read it, I'm curious if any character jumps out as underserved, and if there are any big story questions that you think should be front and center in future adventures. Again, this is a very long post, so anybody who reads it is a total star:
The FATE of the Galaxy: A Star Wars Tabletop Campaign
BACKGROUND
In the wake of the Battle of Yavin, the Empire musters its forces and begins a galaxy-wide campaign of reprisal. Mos Eisley becomes target number one after Imperial intelligence identifies the spaceport as the origin point for key participants in the Death Star’s destruction. Elsewhere, on warlike Mandalore, the Empire begins a ruthless purge against the clans. The Imperials aim to seize the Mandalorians’ vast stores of priceless Beskar steel and prevent the warrior clans from joining forces with the newly ascendant rebellion. On the dark-side infected world of Dathomir, the once-proud Nightsister congregations were long ago decimated by Separatist droid armies but their sites of unholy power still linger, eyed greedily by Vader’s Inquisitors. On Coruscant, the webs of intrigue woven by Imperials and dissidents alike threaten to ensnare the unwary across the galaxy.
It is a time of uncertainty. It is a time of hope and fear, where the fate of the galaxy stands upon a knife’s edge. In such a time opportunities for legendary heroism and despicable villainy, magnificent profit and crushing loss, are as numerous as the stars themselves.
PART I: THE JUNDLAND JOB
Amidst the occupation of Mos Eisley, three locally-notorious figures and a recently arrived mercenary are drawn into a gunfight with Hutt Cartel assassins, followed by a tussle with trigger-happy stormtroopers in the city’s dusty back alleys. They save one another’s skins, and a team is formed. Word of their skill spreads and, after receiving a holographic message delivered by an unusually intelligent Kowakian Monkey-Lizard, they are hired by BORIS ARSHEKOS (aka “Boshek”) – a famous smuggler in service to Gardulla the Hutt. Boshek asks them to recover a valuable package buried in the savage Jundland Wastes, and in addition to a handsome fee he promises a series of unique, custom-tailored boons. To the back alley surgeon and bizarrely compassionate droid KVD-19, he offers information about his mysterious maker. To the resourceful, sigil-hungry Mandalorian gunslinger who calls himself MANDO OMEGA he offers a good word with the local Mandalorian settlement. To the hunted Zabrak pitfighter TRYZA BUKK he offers a clean slate with the Hutt cartels. To the idealistic street-racer and self-taught engineering prodigy CORBIN DELLER he offers a chance for thrilling adventure and the opportunity to deliver Mos Eisley from dark forces. Boshek warns his new hires that the Empire has planned a terror bombing of Jundland in response to resistance among the Tusken tribes. The team must act quickly, or dally and risk being blown to smithereens by TIE bombers.
Outside Boshek’s hangar the party passes through an anti-alien rally being held by the youth wing of COMPNOR, the Empire’s ideological civilian organization. Tryza holds back her fury and discomfort and joins the rest of the team in gathering supplies and armaments. As the team prepares, the city is thick with rumors of a terrifying new swoop bike gang/cult called the ARMS OF THE SARLAAC. The scuttlebutt in Mos Eisley back alleys and cantinas is that the Arms seek an artifact buried in the Jundland wastes, believing it will grant them the power to expel the Empire and seize control of the city. Corbin Deller has heard of this group before and is worried that a friend of his has fallen into their clutches. Our team takes these rumors to heart, realizing that they are not the only formidable group in pursuit of Boshek’s buried treasure.
A strict exit blockade is enforced in Mos Eisley, making it near-impossible to leave the city without attracting Imperial attention. The team leverages their underworld contacts to acquire fake exit chips and, posing as a resupply squad headed for the Jundland stormtrooper garrison, pass through the Mos Eisley cordon sanitaire without arousing suspicion.
After scaring off some opportunistic Jawa scavengers, the team piles into a speeder that Corbin has heavily modified with podracer parts and spends several uneventful hours zooming through the Chott Salt flats. Suddenly, they fly straight into the teeth of one of the flats’ much-feared sandstorms. Their engines are damaged, and they are forced to dig a makeshift dugout and shelter there until the desert calms down. As night falls and the storm rages, Tryza Bukk reveals her heretofore hidden force sensitivity and is overcome by a powerful surge of dark side energy. She loses control, unleashing a flurry of blows on her comrades. Several of them are badly injured.
While KVD treats the team’s injuries and everyone eyes Tryza uneasily, Corbin fixes the sand-clogged macgyver machine. Their ride repaired, the battered treasure hunters resume their journey toward Jundland.
As they proceed, the team encounters a small stormtrooper squad. The troops are leading a ragged gaggle of shackled Tuskens back to the garrison for interrogation. Boshek’s mercenaries, struck by a fit of heroism, launch a surprise attack on the troopers and free their prisoners, saving them from a horrific ordeal courtesy of the Empire’s torture droids. The Sand People hoot their thanks and disappear back into the desert, promising to spread word of the honorable deed done by this strange group of city-dwellers.
The team eventually arrives at the Jundland wastes, finding the maze of cliffs and rocky gorges crawling with stormtroopers, AT-STs, and TIE squadrons. The bombing raid begins just as the group approaches the coordinates they received from Boshek. Tryza Bukk uses her grit, dexterity, and toughness to dodge the explosions and dig up their quarry. It is a long rectangular box, crafted from an unidentifiable metal and bearing a complex combination lock. Tryza senses powerful dark side energies emanating from within.
Tryza, Corbin, KVD and Mando leave the wastes triumphantly, stopping briefly to pick up a Tusken youth barely clinging to life after being caught amidst the Empire’s indiscriminate bombing raid. KVD treats the youth’s burns and learns he has sworn a blood-oath of vengeance against the occupiers after his father, a Tusken chief, was killed by stormtroopers during a parley and the rest of his tribe was killed during the recent bombing.
Corbin’s lightning-fast modified speeder carries them halfway across the Salt Flats before they are ambushed by a wolfpack of swoop-bike riders. The Arms of the Sarlaac have made their move. After a hair-raising chase, Mando Omega hits the gangster-cultists with a barrage of blaster fire and explosives, thinning their ranks, while Corbin baffles them with hairpin turns and sudden reversals. Tryza uses her martial arts skills and nascent force abilities to assist in the fight, while KVD tries to keep the injured Tusken calm. The Arms’ leader, a heavily scarred demagogue known as Jarek who claims to have escaped from the depths of the Sarlaac itself, reveals force powers. He transforms the sands of the desert into molten-hot tentacles, using them to lash the Speeder and grasp at the team. Despite Jarek’s awesome display of dark power, the team escapes, excavated box and injured Tusken in tow. They arrive back at Mos Eisley, eager to claim their promised rewards from Boshek.
INTERLUDE
The team passes once again through the Mos Eisley blockade, fooling the guards with an improvised tale that the Tusken is a prisoner being brought in from the desert for questioning. The Tusken, though his wounds are still fresh, thanks his rescuers but insists on returning to the wastelands, to find whatever is left of his people and seek revenge against the Empire. The team attempts to dissuade him, but he is unmoved.
The group heads towards Boshek’s starship hangar to claim their reward but finds it surrounded by troopers. The group slips away and, relying on Corbin’s knowledge of local secrets, enters a sewer tunnel beneath the hanger. Mando Omega sneaks into the hangar undetected and watches as Boshek is arrested by Imperial intelligence. His captors question him about the team he hired, and that team realizes they may have to make themselves scarce or else join Boshek in an Imperial prison. Together, still carrying the mysterious box, they repair to Mando’s ungainly but heavily-armored transport ship, The Ryder. Mando receives an encrypted message on a secret Mandalorian communication channel – several members of his clan have crash-landed on Dathomir after escaping the Imperial purge on Mandalore, and request aid from any Mandalorians who can make it to the star system and pick them up. Mando asks the others to help him rescue his countrymen and the team, already eager to escape Mos Eisley and elude the Empire, agree. KVD mentions an outstanding invitation, issued by a young Zabrak warrior whom the droid treated during his surgical career, to stay at a hidden community on Dathomir known as Haven. Tryza, meanwhile, realizes that a visit to Dathomir might give her the opportunity to track down her long-lost brother, who left to join the Nightbrothers decades ago, in the waning years of the Clone Wars.
As the party enters Tatooine’s atmosphere aboard the Ryder, a squadron of X-Wings appears out of hyperspace and a low-altitude space battle begins over Mos Eisley. The local TIEs heavily outnumber the rebel ships, and the Empire has the clear upper hand in the battle. The Ryder, with Corbin at the controls, weaves through the dueling fleets, dodging laser fire and crashing vessels. The Mandalorian ship breaks free of Tatooine’s orbit, but not before suffering severe damage to its life-support systems.
PART II: THE DATHOMIR DEBACLE
The Ryder limps into Dathomir’s orbit, flying past its blood-red sun and into the storm-lashed atmosphere. The ship suffers lightning damage as it weaves through the stormclouds. The crew arrives at the site where Haven is supposed to stand, but find nothing but an empty, rainswept plain surrounded by thick jungle and swampland.
Disembarking from their damaged ship, the party discovers a mysterious metal hatch underneath a patch of fake grass in the clearing. The party begins to realize Haven is located underground. They uncover a small communicator attached to the hatch and attempt to hail the city’s inhabitants. They receive a response from a familiar voice – it is Malmor, KVD’s Zabrak friend from Mos Eisley.
The Zabrak opens the hatch and ushers the team onto an elevator which leads deep into the planet’s guts. He asks Tryza if she remembers beating him up in a fight at Felvath Kurs’ arena, but Tryza doesn’t recognize him. She has unceremoniously defeated countless Zabrak men in the arena, she can’t be expected to remember each one. Descending, the party is accosted by a spiderlike security droid, which Mando unceremoniously blasts to pieces. Eventually, they arrive in Haven, a wet, dark city made up of innumerable crisscrossing catwalks and structures dug into the cavern walls. The party splits up, some seeking repair parts for the Ryder, Tryza tracking down information about her brother.
The party is able to locate all the parts needed to fix the’s Ryder’s pressure and oxygen after dealing with a creepy, maggot-white Hutt exile. Tryza eventually gets word that a Zabrak matching her brother’s description has been committed to a local “hostel,” where former Nightbrothers are imprisoned and subjected to systematic mental reprogramming which will break their connection with the force. Tryza resolves to set her brother free, and the team – sans Corbin -- agrees to help.
Mando sets up a sniper’s nest on a ledge near the hostel’s entrance, Tryza and KVD attempt to talk their way past the hostel guards. Tryza eventually makes it in and, eluding or tricking security with KDV’s help, reaches the main ward, where rows upon rows of beds host dozens of half-mad or comatose former Nightbrothers. It is very much a “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” situation. Tryza locates her brother by singing an old Zabrak children’s song and waiting for his response. Tryza’s singing causes something of a stir, and a minor dark side storm starts brewing as the mentally unstable Zabrak patients are driven to a heightened emotional state.
Meanwhile, both Mando and Corbin are confronted by Haven Watchers, the local secret police, and questioned about their connections to the Empire or Rebellion. Mando begins a hand-to-hand brawl with his interlocutor, while Corbin smooth-talks his way out of arrest and returns to the ship with the new parts. There he waits for the rest of the crew to emerge from Haven. As Tryza speaks with her brother and seeks to calm the other agitated Zabrak, the ward’s director appears. Tryza knocks him unconscious and frees her brother, while KVD distracts the guards by staging a fake medical emergency with one of the patients. The bedridden Zabrak inmates go nuts when the director is knocked out, unleashing random blasts of force lighting. Tryza escapes, her brother in tow, and makes it out of the hostel just as a squad of Haven Watchers appear. She fights them off empty-handed and manages to flee in the hubbub and destruction caused by the blasts of lightning emanating from the hostel. The group rushes up Haven’s catwalks back towards the surface, planning to escape on the Ryder. Along the way, Tryza, Mando and KVD save several civilians endangered by falling bits of infrastructure or bolts of dark side lightning. The party regroups on the planet’s red-tinted surface, where the rainstorm has grown stronger. Tryza, Mando and KVD fight gale-force winds and evade flying tree trunks. They reach the ship and begin the arduous process of assisting Corbin with his repairs, which is an epic and unexpectedly perilous task. At the end, though, the Ryder is once again spaceworthy. The party flies away from Haven, heading toward the coordinates given to Mando by his stranded Mandalorian comrades.
As the Ryder reaches the coordinates – a narrow valley in the depths of the jungle – several TIE fighters swoop in on them and order the Ryder to prepare for boarding. The party resists. Mando jumps into a gun turret and shoots down two TIES, causing the rest to retreat. During the space battle, Tryza is forced to calm down her still-unstable brother, while KVD finally cracks open Boshek’s box. Inside is a handheld metal tube and a small pyramid.
The group, having driven off the Imperial fighters for now, land in the valley and follow Mando’s coordinates. The party slogs through several miles of swampland, and both Tryza and her brother Dodro feel powerful force energies suffusing the place. Statutes of nightbrother warriors and nightsister witches peer down on them disapprovingly as they make their way through the muck and mire. Eventually, they reach a crashed Mandalorian vessel. The party goes to investigate and is attacked by Shear Mites, dog-sized, acid spewing insects that jealously defend their nests. During the battle, KVD wields the tube he found in Boshek’s box. It is a double-bladed crimson lightsaber, which the droid uses to cleave one of the giant insects in two. Everyone in the party notices this shocking development, especially Tryza. The group slays the attacking creepy-crawlies, with Tryza putting on a spectacular display of acrobatic dodging and Mando living up to his reputation as a skilled gunslinger. After the fight, the party discovers the insects’ newly-built nest in the center of the crashed vessel’s bridge. Corbin wastes no time in blowing the nest to bits, revealing a cache of Mandalorian Beskar Steel. Mando finds the corpse of one of his three missing clan members in the ruined ship’s cockpit. Mando says a few respectful words over the body of his comrade. He also discovers a holographic transmitter clutched in the corpse’s hand. It contains a message explaining the other two Mandalorians – pursued by the Empire and Dathomiri predators (both Shear Mites and something much bigger) -- took shelter in a structure about one mile down the valley with as much Beskar as they could carry. Meanwhile, as the rest of the party searches the ruined Mandalorian ship, the lightsaber falls out of KVD’s storage compartment. The idealistic Corbin sees the hungry look in Tryza’s eyes and places a boot on the lightsaber, aiming his blaster at the Sith weapon. He doesn’t want his friend tempted any further by the dark side.
Tryza demands that Corbin give her the saber. Corbin says he will blast it if she tries to take it. Mando pulls two guns and tells the team to stop their bickering, they have a mission to do and Mandalorians to save. KVD watches, distressed, and attempts to calm everyone down. Tryza makes a move and Corbin blasts the saber. An angry, disembodied wail fills the crashed ship as the lightsaber is damaged, and Dodro, frightened, murmurs a name. KVD and Tryza hear it, but keep it to themselves. After a tense moment, the party puts aside their conflict and heads back into the valley. Tryza takes the damaged saber into her possession.
As the group plunges further into the swampy valley, they notice that the TIES have returned, soaring above the canopy and landing in large numbers on the clifftops above them. The group presses on and the jungle gets thicker, the Nightsister statutes more decrepit. Eventually, they reach a cave shaped like a Rancor’s mouth and enter, knowing that the lost Mandalorians are somewhere within.
The party travels down a dark corridor. Dodro gets angry that Tryza has brought him back to the world of the Nightbrothers, and rants at her for a moment before losing energy and withdrawing back into himself. KVD turns on his high beams and discovers that the corridor is filled with old but well-preserved nightbrother corpses and destroyed CIS droids. This site was clearly the location of a major battle between the Separatists and the Nightbrothers/Sisters. The party presses on, and encounters a rusty but still-operational CIS droideka wedged in between a pair of automatic doors. KVD does some droid diplomacy, learning that this site was once used for training Rancors, and relieving the broken droid of its duties. It shuts down, allowing them to pass. The group continues on, arriving in a huge, sinister chapel. There are four doors on the walls leading out, a gigantic nightsister statue at the front, and a metal grate on the floor.
Tryza reaches out with her feelings and detects fear coming from the grate, and an unexpected euphoria coming from one of the doors. Mando, using his tactical insight and deductive reasoning skills, determines that his comrades would most likely have sought shelter in the part of the building behind the “euphoric” door. The party walks to the room beyond, which turns out to be an indoor hydroponic food/herb/drug garden that has become massively overgrown in the years since the fortress fell. The party picks their way through the overgrowth, when their senses are assaulted by a powerful, sickly-sweet smell. It makes everyone but the droid somewhat dizzy and moronically happy, but Mando is overwhelmed entirely. He feels an intense desire just to stay in this room amidst the plants, inhaling this heavenly smell. He expresses his feelings to the rest of the party, who are alarmed.
A voice from deeper within the garden speaks, exhibiting the same dippy euphoria as Mando: “Omega is that you buddy! It’s so cool in here, isn’t it! Don’t you love that smell?” Mando responds in the affirmative and begins following the voice. KVD injects him with a medical adrenaline boost that snaps him out of his reverie. Mando continues following the voice, more cautiously now.
The party eventually finds the source of the voice, and the smell. A Mandalorian in armor, his helmet removed, sits at the foot of a giant blooming flower with a goofy smile on his face. The flower is producing an overwhelmingly sweet aroma, and several of its tendrils are wrapped around the Mandalorian’s limbs and body.

2020.10.20 22:56 Azteckh Dastardly Digital Disease Doggedly Destroys Deck (Digital Bugs for Casual)

Don't dare debase deez deft dudes. Humans with eyes knew I wasn't going to keep that gimmick going. Start drawing parallels now.

Digital Bugs are still bad. Local Water Strider doesn't fix this but he was nice to wake up to. I'm not going to count on more, but if there must be more, just reprint Strider again but with a different name Digital Bug Siliworm. Inzektors are typically used here but honestly, why use those and spend more, when you can remember another deck; Battlewasp; and realize eventually, that this motherbord isn't buggy. No sir. Its actually fulla bees, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

These boys are very rough and still probably won't win. I've done this for fun and because I kinda like these guys. I'm seeking tips to make this better, of course, but if all this means to you; is a fun 5 minute read, I'm also cool with that.
Monsters: 25 Amount to RMA How to cool it
Digital Bug Centibit 3 Sometimes it just comes down to "whomst will be put in Def" rather than "how" because Centibit can summon lads from deck off strider. This is a super start, considering everything that these guys have to offer. I just wish that he could set himself in defense without any other input. His overlay effect is situational at best, but can, in fact, do work, once every sixteen games.
Digital Bug Websolder 3 Fun fact he is one of your three ways to set dudes to def. And his effect upon this occurrence is fantastic. Web + Centi into Scar can also do some pretty good work.
Digital Bug LEDybug 3 He's your searcher but he only does it if he's allowed to go into defense. Things are getting hard now, cuz you'll want Srider. But in order to search him, you have summon LEDy, so you're either using your normal for that and having no way to set to defense, or, you're gonna summon LEDy alongside Strider to keep the dread going. His overlay effect can be busted if comboed with others but man, does that not happen.
Digital Bug Cocoondencer 3 Literally running Foolish to make use of him. Hopefully get Foolish, toss LED into the GY to make use of some Fun Times. You're not making that search, but you might be able to make someone that can. His overlay effect is good. AG protections in any deck is good to see.
Digital Bug Resistrider 3 The Kingpin. You'll be praying to have him, and he lets you do a lot, lets you extend, and turns Scar into something that can actually kill.
Battlewasp - Twinbow the Attacker 3 Free material for whatever.
Battlewasp - Sting the Poison 2 Summoned by any means nets you a free Pin, or Twinbow; whatever the circumstance calls for.
Battlewasp - Arbalest the Attacker 2 Useful with a GY set up.
Battlewasp - Pin the Bullseye 3 Free material again featuring: 200 burn damage because this 'puter runs hot; dang it.

Spell: t-h-i-r-t-e-e-n Can you even? Can you do it.
Bug Signal 3 Still a powerhouse!!! You'll need it! You'll want it! You won't be able to do much without either it, or Strider. You don't entirely need both to make plays but you need at least one!!!!
Foolish Burial 1 Enables Cocoon, or can make Revival Swarm funny. That's all.
Revival Swarm 3 All bees is the same. They just wanna come back. And we allow for them to do so.
Summoning Swarm 3 All bees is the same. They just wanna come back. And we allow for them to do so. These wings don't degrade; coward.
Spiders Lair 3 Probably a bad choice, but it allows for some very very minor stalling

Traps 3 of them 3 traps
Bug Emergency 3 I hate this card. I hate it. If it was a spell, I'd love it to death. You will need this to extend your plays, Tindangle Style, but good luck when you need it, as you cannot search it. Good luck out there, Websolder.

Extra cards: 12 Basically all of them are XYZ Stay tuned as we summon AA-Zeus in Digital Bug
Digital Bug Rhinosebus 2 An incredible unit. Digibugs were cool because they were kinda the extremely awful precursor to Zoos, and this boy resembles their entire gameplan which to be clear, is forcing dudes to defense, and beating them to smithereens. Its not a bad plan, but its done terribly here.
Digital Bug Corebage 2 Oh yeah its Moth time babey!!! You can, again, see the point here, right? Grab an idiot your foe controls that is in defense, and spin that dweeb. If you can manage to do some other work whilst the moth doth flutter, please feel free to grab other digital bugs and throw them beneath him.
Digital Bug Scaradinator 2 He's ok. He rolls heat into that sink he's got there, and keeps right on going. Cost for effect is extremely high, but he can, in theory only, reach decent values with Strider. 2800 ain't bad, counters Dark Magician, so we got something to work with here.
Number 3: Cicada King 2 Honest to goodness is a great help. Enables strider. Calls in the Wasp Brethren for an Air Raid, and can gel with Corebage if you freakin manage to do the impossible and... make a link, and then still have the mats for not one, but two XYZs.
Number 20: Giga-Brilliant 1 Remember: all the bugs overlay effects are completely generic. Making him with strider at least can net you a possible 3100 attack. Do it right and on top of that beefy attack, you could also at least force all of 'em into defense, and then proceed to beat them up with such heroes as: Centibit.
Number 28: Titanic Moth 1 Another option for some damage dealing. He'd actually move units if you could use more than 2, and if the bugs xyz effects went off if attached off-field but whatever. Bug Matrix continues to be basically useless.
Seraphim Papillion 1 This Moth Has Bees In It
Insect Shinobi Hagakuremino 1 Another option for the link effort.
Now you will notice how I did not once mention their 'upgrade' mechanic and that it is because it is bad and you should not ever do it, as the cost to do it is way too high. Just like Apple computers. Its not worth it, was instantly superseded by something that was infinitely better already. Literally on arrival.

I am seeking ways to make this better, of course. Particularly the Extra as I know its bad.
Thanks for reading.

2020.10.20 01:40 FnordPrefect2020 [POEM] The Conquerors by Phyllis McGinley

The Conquerors

It seems vainglorious and proud Of Atom-man to boast aloud His prowess homicidal When one remembers how for years, With their rude stones and humble spears, Our sires, at wiping out their peers, Were almost never idle. Despite his under-fissioned art The Hittite made a splendid start Toward smiting lesser nations; While Tamerlane, it's widely known, Without a bomb to call his own Destroyed whole populations.
Nor did the ancient Persian need Uranium to kill his Mede, The Viking earl, his foeman. The Greeks got excellent results With swords and engined catapults. A chariot served the Roman.
Mere cannon garnered quite a yield On Waterloo's tempestuous field. At Hastings and at Flodden Stout countrymen, with just a bow And arrow, laid their thousands low. And Gettysburg was sodden.
Though doubtless now our shrewd machines Can blow the world to smithereens More tidily and so on, Let's give our ancestors their due. Their ways were coarse, their weapons few. But ah! how wondrously they slew With what they had to go on.

2020.10.19 05:42 Randdom_user The thing of the deep

It is all too clear for us- the Hive experiments- they create wretched beasts, enchant their own, bring back the dead. Their sword logic has them crazy fixated on making themselves the only thing to live, the only thing that deserves to live. Who knows just how many civilizations, young and old, have their claws reached and eaten. In this hunger for power is the source of their need for those experiments, to prove that they are the best. Ogres, Knights, Witches, Thrall. It is clear they have been evolving since their beginnings on Fundament. Well, it just so happened that we had the misfortune in interrupting a ritual, a ritual of creation, of a new form. It all started with my fireteam, Jake, Chaala and me. Two warlocks and a titan. We were dispatched to a strike on the moon, off records. Apparently Eris had received visions, visions of a new haunting form, beyond the Nightmares. Some sort of breed between Hive and Taken. Didn’t really matter to us, we were all too eager to shoot some thrall. First mistake. Anyhow, we landed on site and went in. Nothing could prepare us for what would follow;
Check sensors, I have no signs of activity here. Could be a faulty read.” I broke the silence first, monotone voices, all a mere formality.
Huh? I have nothing here, what about you Chaala?” Jake was quick to respond, as if he himself wanted to ask first.
Nothing here. Who cares anyway, the Vanguard finally assigned us a job, let’s get to shooting some hive!” Chaala, our titan, all too eager to shoot and punch some Acolytes.
I too want to kill some ugly hive, let's take note of this and press on, eyes peeled.” I said, heading into the cave that presented itself before us, no signs of hive terraforming either. Must’ve been sacrilegious to the hive too if there were no traces of them here. We pressed on
***************************************************************************************
We walked down the single path inside the cave for miles upon miles. No signs of any Hive activity.
How deep have we gone now? We have been walking for at least two hours.” Chaala, never one to be patient, asked for the billionth time.
Hold on! I’m Getting faint readings, a small swarm coming our way, 50 feet…. 25…. 10…
Jake surprised us, but sure enough we all got pings. We braced for contact, we should’ve been able to see them, or at the very least, hear them. Yet nothing, nothing came close to us for the next five minutes.
You guys hear that? That screech? It came from behind us!”
Chaala was not one to be scared easily, yet from his voice I could tell he was startled. It was broken, nervous and worried.
Did you see that? It's here, its… It’s inside of my helmet! Ahhhhh!
A fury of bullets rained from his weapon. shooting everywhere, indiscriminately. He fell down, and kept shooting until his mag ran out. His ghost dropped suddenly, it muttered its final words, a sort of warning;
It's eating my… our light, you have to turn back… please… it's like nothing you would see… understand… kill…”
The ghost’s light faded, Chaalas, feet had begun fighting, he started punching the air. Finally he gave up, and took off his helmet, rather, the thing took off the helmet. Inside there were no remains of his existence. No blood, no bones, no flesh. That's when I spotted the creature, a vile greenish looking slimey orb, with tentacles and three rotating eyes. It then became as big as Chaala, the towering titan, and faded back into nothingness. It was like a living ghost! But it was really not, it was unbelievable, unforgettable, unthinkable. We pressed on, foolishly.
***************************************************************************************
Not a word between us two. We knew inside we had to seek vengeance. For our friend. A mighty titan which was beaten swiftly by a… a… a thing! So indescribable, unimaginable.
We walked for even more hours, never finding an end. Soon we found ourselves back at the site of Chaalas death. The site of his ghost’s resting place, his clothes and weapon. Yet we found… nothing! It was all consumed, eaten and long gone.
That’s when we heard it. Its devilish screech that could pass for a laugh. A million images passed through my eyes, green, red, purple… triangles, circles, squares. Shifting from reality to imaginary. A sort of illusionary ballet, distorting itself, appearing and disappearing. Buzzing from top to bottom, left to right. And then… nothing. It simply vanished. And so did Jake.
A flash of light, a flash of darkness. I was back at the entrance, surrounded by Hidden agents and Eris Morn herself! I found myself the center of attention, sitting on the ground, holding two ghosts, mine and Jake’s. One flickered and hummed back to life, the other, dead, rock solid and cold. So cold in fact, that my hand began to freeze from holding it. That’s when Drifter’s voice interrupted the admiration, the investigation, the concentration;
You all right, kid? Tell me, what the hell you saw inside? Two guardians are down and we lost contact about three DAYS ago. No signs of vitals either. Did you kill them? End your friend’s lifes? Or was it something bigger?
It was- it was as small as a sidearm, but it was way bigger than a man! It screeched and taunted us, it shifted and cried, it killed and ate. It was indescribable, I am telling you!
Sure thing kid, the hive are ugly but nothing quite like that.
I am begging you to understand, it was a sort of nightmare, hunting without existing, dragging us between realities, only coming into existence once it would feast. But its form was like nothing else! Nothing we could understand, nothing of this cursed universe!
I know kid, we will blow this cave to smithereens, just tell me, why did you kill your friends?
What are you talking about! I could see the… the cursed thing! I know what I saw!
Your ghost says otherwise, it spoke of you rambling on about a monster just seconds since entering, you started shooting everything and everyone, eventually you supercharged your gun and destroyed your friends ghosts, killing them then and feasting on their lifeless bodies. Quite an elaborate way to remove evidence I must say. We found you a while ago, blood on your mouth, sitting here, crying. That’s one way to go down
“Wha- but- But I saw them die by the… the shape shifting hive-taken hybrid. It whispered as it killed, no… it hummed! It hummed Savathun’s song!”
That 's enough! We’ll take it from here.” Eris finally interjected. Her voice cut through all the comotion.
***************************************************************************************
Get me to Zavala, this confirms the dreams I saw, a new terror from the deep, a new hive type born beyond the confines of Light and Dark. If this is a work of Savathun then we might be in deep trouble. Drifter, we need to talk to the stranger.” That was the last of Eris, they all scattered as fast as they could. As for me, well I am now under Drifters protection, they want me to speak about the thing, to find weak points, ways to kill it. But how do you kill that which is out of this plane of existence?
***************************************************************************************
Hope you enjoyed this self-contained story. See you on the field, Guardians!

2020.10.19 02:46 plaid_pvcpipe AN HONORABLE WAR STORY OF MINE

SO ABOUT 10 FELLOW MARINES AND I WERE TRAVELLING WITH SOME MENIALS AND A PSYKER NAMED TIM THE ENCHANTER MET WITH US.
HE TOLD OF A GREAT BEAST THAT LIE IN OUR HONORABLE PATH. IT HAD BIG, SHARP, AND POINTY TEETH.
SO HE LED US TO THE NEXT PART OF OUR JOURNEY AND WE SAW A SMALL RABBIT. IT WAS IN A FIELD OF BONES, BESIDE A CAVERN. ALL OF THE BROTHER MARINES PROTESTED SAYING IT WAS NOTHING MORE THAN A LITTLE RABBIT. BUT TIM THE ENCHANTER SAID THAT IT HAD A VISCOUS STREAK A MILE WIDE.
ONE BROTHER STEPPED UP, PROUDLY HOLDING ALOFT HIS SWORD AND HONORABLY SAID, "I SHALL SLAY IT!" HE WALKED FORTH INTO THE RABBITS ALCOVE, AND IT DISHONORABLY LEAPED AT HIM, GNASHING IT'S POINTY TEETH.
HE NEVER STOOD A CHANCE, AS THE DISHONORABLE RABBIT OF THE PLANET CAERBANNOG CUT HIS HEAD CLEAN OFF!
IN HONORABLE HORROR, I YELLED, "THAT'S IT! HONORABLY CHARGE!" AND SO WE SPEWED FORTH, HACKING, SLASHING, AND HONORABLY SHOOTING. HOWEVER, MULTIPLE BROTHERS WERE SLAIN AND WE RETREATED.
WHEN WE CONFRONTED THE HONORABLE TECH PRIESTS, THEY PRESENTED US WITH THE HOLY HAND GRENADE OF TERRA.
AFTER RECITING THEIR HONORABLE PRAYERS, ONE HELD IT ALOFT AND SAID:
"And Saint Ollanius raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, 'O man Emperor, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy.' And the Emperor did grin. And the people did feast upon the grox, and corpse starch, and Tyranids, and Orks, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats, and large Squiggoths. And the Emperor spake, saying, 'First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Terra towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it."
"AMEN," WE ALL SPOKE.
THEN, HAND GRENADE IN HAND, I SHOUTED ALOUD AFTER PULLING THE HONORABLE PIN, "RIGHT! ONE, TWO, FIVE!" I HAD MADE A GRIEVOUS ERROR! THE HONORABLE MAN EMPEROR DID NOT ORDAIN THAT COUNTING.
BROTHER KEHLT INTERJECTED, "Three sir."
"OH, THREE!"
THEN I LOBBED THE HONORABLE HOLY HAND GRENADE OF TERRA AT THE DISHONORABLE RABBIT OF CAERBANNOG AND BLEW IT TO SMITHEREENS!
THE CAVE THAT WE ENTERED AFTER WAS ALSO VERY PERILOUS, BUT THAT IS A STORY FOR ANOTHER HONORABLE TIME.

2020.10.19 02:05 SliverCrepes Disappointed in The Testaments

Just wanted to vent, because I’m reading this about a year after I read The Handmaid’s Tale, which hit the right balance of mystery, dystopia, and social commentary for me (loved how dreadful “The Wall” was).
Now, I’m about 2/3 through Testaments and I’m rather bored with it. THT felt mature and serious, with the oppressive atmosphere weighing down on Offred. Gilead was forbidding and all-powerful, and I loved that I didn’t know the scope of their domain. Now in The Testaments, they’re training a high school girl in martial arts so that she can infiltrate Gilead and obtain secret documents that will blow the whole operation up in smithereens. It just feels like someone else wrote a YA novel set in the same universe.
Does this have something to do with the TV series having been produced (haven’t watched it, nor will I bother if it’s more like TT than THT) and Atwood being influenced by it?

2020.10.18 20:51 sitontheedge Creeper Hives (a new structure)

So, all this talk about the new cave biomes got me thinking about our old friend the creeper. He's the iconic Minecraft mob, but aside from having a gut full of explosives and a bad temper, what do we really know about the guy? And what sort of animal blows itself up to destroy you anyhow? What sort of behavior is that for a living thing?
Well, in nature we see behavior like this from hive insects: individuals will sacrifice themselves for the defense of the hive. Might our mottled green friends really be the drones of some unseen hive? The idea is fittingly creepy, and a creeper hive as a rare dungeon would fit great into the newly refurbished caves. Here's a sketch...

Creeper Hive

Creeper hives would connect to existing cave networks. They would only be found rarely and in the deeper parts of the map. They would be free from water and lava, and in many places instead of stone the walls would be covered with "creeperite", a pale greenish material that emits a faint glow and has an unusually high blast resistance. (Thus ordinary creeper detonations would not destroy the hive itself.)
Within the hive only creepers would spawn. That would include the iconic creeper (the hive's defense drone), as well as his larger relative "the heaper" (its worker drone). These latter would not explode, but would still be nasty customers with more HP and the ability to slow you down with gobs of creeperite so his mates can blow you too smithereens. (The heaper, as the name implies, is the one who builds the tunnels of the hive. And farming heapers would be the only renewable way to harvest creeperite.)
One might dare the dangers of the hive just to see its eerie interior, but one might also be lured in by the promise of treasure hidden in the creeperite combs or the challenge of fighting the creeper queen herself! The queen would be a mini-boss spawned into the hive at world generation. She would occupy a central cavern, and have the ability to call up her lesser minions in droves to fight you. But you'll be taking the risk alone: even a tame cat will not follow you into a creeper hive!

2020.10.18 08:03 himthatspeaks Newb DND Family, CoS: Part 2

Everyone is at level 2 at the start of the Death House event. I've borrowed from a couple different places.
I think we've completed sessions four and five since my last post.
Session four: The party picked up a puppy along the way to the death house as well as a barbarian (my son's friend was over at family DND time and he was down to try it out). The puppy belongs to Gertruda.I gave the puppy the name of our new puppy to make a possible sacrifice that much worse for them. The puppy idea was borrowed from someone else for a potential sacrifice.
Floor 1 of death house, nothing particularly noticeable. Just clearing rooms. The barb thought it would be a great idea to wear a top hat and coat (found in the coat closet). I tried to explain that a barb wouldn't really do that but he was put off by the idea his character was mostly shirtless and armor-less going into combat. So we have a barb (hairy, bearded) with a top hat and poorly fitting aristocrat jacket with silk lining. He's playing the barb as basically a caveman trying to be a fancy gentleman but speaks slightly better than Groot. I tried explaining he was actually a smart barbarian, (intel 12) but he kept going with the cave man speech thing.
There wasn't too much going on on the second floor, but the party finally was putting together that things are related with Rose and Thorn and putting the clues together into a cohesive story. This was very exciting for them because up until now, our little mini-adventures have been killing rats, spiders, zombies, twig blights, and wolves with no real purpose than having fun and killing stuff from point a to point b. This was the first time there was mystery and depth. My oldest daughter (16) is completely drawn in! She likes the mystery, not as much the combat.
My son (12-junior high) immediately goes to his room after sessions to tell his school friends on discord what happened during each session as if it were a real thing. He likes the combat, doesn't care as much for the deeper story telling. He's playing the paladin as a smug Kristoff/Flynn Ryder type - find steed is a moose (elk stats).
My other daughter (14) dressed up for tonight's game. She doesn't seem as interested in playing (or empty rooms), but wants to see each monster, especially the monster in the basement. She'll have her character rush into the room just to see the monster without regard for party members or the situation. She's on the spectrum and I'm using it as social skills development. Once she sees the new monster, she'll help out. Generally tries to do everything but attack. Dancing lights, sleep... even res'd a werewolf when it turned back into its human form, put it to sleep, then carried/drug it around with her during part A of CoS. She's playing a Dragonborn bard and I'm trying to stack everything possible so she can play the way she wants and still contribute.
Session 5: Its been hard to really decide how my wife was feeling about everything. She said she's having fun, and it is good family time. Tonight, I got a pretty good clue. We're on the third floor and my wife got to close to the crib after multiple warnings and pissed off Margaret (the nursemaid) while working on the animated armor which took forever. (They managed to proc a specter before defeating the animated armor as level 2s. Hopefully they don't open more doors before clearing initial threats. Unless they have some strong aggro plans in place). My wife retreats into the secret door leading to the stair case after the specter's first failed attack. I gave her a clue the specter could move though stuff (it moved right through the bed like the bed didn't exist). She then shut herself in that staircase, shut the door. Specter Maggie moved directly into the staircase and it was an instant wifey kill. My wife, was visibly distressed and made an excuse to leave immediately. I had to coax her back to playing. (Penalty of death - specter PTSD). She was very distressed over the prospect her character was dead and she wouldn't get to play anymore. I'm hoping this is right, the paladin res/healed her.
Partly my mistake the animated armor took so long, I should have added in the advantage rolls for hitting the backside of the armor. (Barbarian got the kill), paladin got the very nice armor that also matches the sword and shield. He now looks like a proper paladin with windmill crests. (I might have all the kids in Barovia run and scream from him and parents utterly disgusted). I think I'm going to tie in the windmill and bone grinder and dream pastry events together. The children think he's tied in with the dream pastry lady and they grind the bones at the windmill place. He's wearing that symbol. Not sure, we'll see where it goes and how much room I have to spare. Might not work. I haven't researched too much further. I'll start looking at where the story goes after the Death house event is done.
They managed to get lucky. The barbarian had his top hat knocked off and went into a rage and killed the animated armor, then ran down the stairs to get his top hat. He had no knowledge of the proc'd specter. On the next round, the paladin scores a crit on the specter) which is good because they'd been rolling like shit against the animated armor). The specter had also nearly wiped out my oldest daughter that insisted on not angering the specter and not attacking it. I thought it might be a TPK situation. The paladin rolled his initial damage quite well then used his thundersmite and that rolled favorable too. It was enough on a crit to kill/defeat the specter.
Wife also opened the door and proc'd the broom that hit her on the head a couple times. She tried locking it in but the barb wanted a piece of it, then the puppy. After smashing it to smithereens, the puppy is now carrying around an animated piece of the broomstick. How nice for a puppy to have its own animated stick to play with. Why is that piece still animated after the broom was killed? Because I want it to be. Perhaps the stick and puppy will be friends forever. The puppy and stick can play fetch forever. Or maybe the stick lives in constant fear of the puppy and it's a stick/broom's personal hell to always be chased by a large dog that chews on it all day, only to gain health the next day and go through getting chewed and chased all over again. Maybe it will carry over as some kind of parallel to Strahd toying and chewing on heroes. Maybe the puppy is Strahd... I don't know. We'll see.
My son stuck around to listen as my daughter and wife tried piecing everything they learned together.
I think they're up to speed, so far, on what's going on. I'm not sure on this yet, but we're pretty sure the nursemaid is the mistress (mother of Walter) which ties a bunch of stuff together.
I've been wondering.... maybe someone can help... Why is the only way up to the attic and the kids room a secret door? Why does it call the third floor, large stair room (room 11) a balcony?
If there's enough interest, I'll post again.

2020.10.17 19:19 sentimentmachine Sixteen92 The Circle feels..

Edited to add-- CS got back to me and will have my package out on Monday!

This is my first year being signed up for the Circle! Loved the first set of samples. The Fall/Halloween ones arrived on my birthday which was awesome, except the entire package was smashed to smithereens. Oil and glass shards everywhere within the package which was also shredded from the broken glass.
I was bummed about the lack of protective packaging, and immediately sent pics and descriptions to Sixteen92s CS FB messages. I got a response later that evening saying a replacement would be in the mail shortly.
Its been 35 business days and I've sent a few messages asking for shipping info/updates and have gotten no response, although the messages are marked as "seen".
I checked the TAT for regular orders and its 28 days.
Sent another message to the CS line and just wondering if anyone else has dealt with something like this before? Just so bummed out.

2020.10.17 15:03 Mofunz Speedy delivery!

I ordered a silver M1 last Saturday, selecting the 1-4 week shipping. I fully expected delivery to take at least 2 weeks, but more likely 3+.
I ordered some pslate cables that are 2-4 weeks out, thinking I had plenty of time.
Well, it shipped Monday. Cool! Friday (yesterday), it arrived at the international distribution center, which I assumed is customs. Maybe I’m right. The customs black hole is where my waiting game begins, right? Wrong! It’s in my home state early this morning?? It’s at my local USPS already??? It’s out for delivery????
Apparently this case is going to be here today, less than 1 full week from when I placed the order. I was mentally prepared for a much longer wait! My hobbies all require so much waiting these days. Thanks to Ncase for getting it out of the warehouse quickly, and thank the universe for good luck through the rest of the travels.
(God I hope I’m not jinxing myself, and it shows up smashed to smithereens)

2020.10.16 10:11 PointMan97 [The Jackal Guards] - Chapter 5 (Beta Reader Test)

Chapter 5: Some old comrades
Mogadishu, Somalia
June 3rd, 2025, 09:45 AM
Mooring off the coast of Mogadishu with patrol boats cruising about to defend the task force, the Tartarus, Aaru, and Duat had their flight decks dotted with Roc Eagle VTOL crafts for rapid deployment of robot wolves into the city. Horus accompanied the troops to lead in person, besides the Crown Prince, he had a cadre of bodyguards. A group of anthropomorphic robot avians similar to Horus in the body structure of their limbs and wings. But their species varied from falcon to hawks, owls, eagles, ravens, crows. They seemed rather a colorful bunch corresponding to their species as well as what appeared to be clothed had on their bodies.
Like Horus, they each wore a combat vest with tactical pouches and ammo for their weapons, a backpack depending on their specialties, but these tend to be satellite radio. Each of these avians embedded into a company of robot wolves acting as their Joint Tactical Air Controller. Horus then led the troops onboard the Aaru to its flight deck and boarded the VTOLs that were spooling up their engines.
Once the troops settled in their seats with Horus sitting in one such VTOL with Temujin and Earl Gunter being part of a ground force consisting of armored MRAPs and amphibious IFVs assembled in the welding deck and deployed alongside the avians as the VTOLs took off. Inquisitor Rameses then called them over the coms network, addressing Horus directly. “Crown Prince Horus, If you be so kind and give the troops a fill-in of what they’re doing here. I’m certain one of upstanding royal blood like you would take care of doing your research.”
Horus groaned hearing this, knowing full well that the Inquisitor purposefully aimed at him for the Calypso Incident. “Alright, if you wish. For anyone new here, welcome to Mogadishu, Somalia. You call it The Mog because these mean streets are full to the brim with hostile targets.” Horus began sarcastically. “The folks here want some peace and a full belly. But they ain’t having it while assholes are still shooting up their lives and bombing their battered sandy streets. Who are you kicking ass? The Somali People’s Liberation Front. Start your bidding on how much they believe in their cause. The godless Commie Boos are shaking hands with Al-Shabaab, and I intend to crash their tea party.”
“The African Union coalition has been policing the region for 3 years straight now. We just so happen to have a contract to assist them when, where, and however possible. Therefore, by contractual obligations, we’re here to kick ass and take names. Get tactical, Jackal Guards!” Horus ended his motivational speech, making his troops' spirits soar as high as the heaven for their deployment as the VTOLs approached Mogadishu. Rameses chuckled bemusedly to Horus's rousing speech as it suggested that the crown prince indeed did his homework.
As they approached the coastline of Mogadishu, passing over the Aden Adde International Airport that was AMISOM III's HQ, they saw the sight of a city still ravaged by constant civil war and lack of functioning government. There were columns of billowing smoke further away from the airport suggesting something had gone wrong. Nearby, they heard the sound of thundering artillery raining shells on the airport. From the sounds they made, these could be 130mm towed artillery.
The LCAC hovercrafts zoomed across the water surface towards the coastline with the MRAPs in tow before disembarking with the IFVs acting as mobile fire support platforms for them. The first ship to enter the city’s dock was the Tartarus bearing a full brunt of tank battalion that disembarked there before forming up for their journey in the relative safety of the AMISOM III’s Blue Zone towards the airport.
"Rameses, talk to me. What's the immediate situation on the ground?" Horus asked urgently while looking out of the VTOL's porthole. Rameses was in the Tartarus' operation control room with a holographic table showing him real-time troops' movements. On that table, Horus' and the Jackal Guards were amber gold with the allied AMISOM III troops in green and the SPLF in red. "Bad, growing worse by the minutes so take your pick. The airport is being shelled by the SPLF to prevent reinforcements for a stranded convoy."
"Who's commanding that convoy, and what's their objective?" Horus asked with a frown as his VTOL flew over the city approaching the busy and bustling downtown area. "It's Colonel Chima, Nigerian Army. He was heading to Cordon and searched the Bakara Market area for an arms shipment, before being ambushed by an IED and lots of tangos since then we lost contact with him. But the surviving troops are holding out nearby, so keep your eyes out for them." Rameses replied cautiously, knowing the name might entice Horus into doing something reckless the moment he touched down.
"Pilot! Take us down to the convoy's location. We'll comb the area and search for Colonel Chima from there. Second Battalion, land, and set up a defensive perimeter around the airport. Expect troublemakers to come your way soon." Horus ordered them with an almost obsessive look on his robot face as he looked out of the porthole. Rameses scoffed and frowned upon hearing this, as the crown prince took his company down West Bakara Boulevard. "You heard him, so do it, and don't forget to take care of those artilleries. They can't be that mobile compared to you." Rameses sternly ordered 2nd Battalion deployment via hovercrafts and helicopters.
As the VTOLs carrying Horus's company approached the boulevard where they saw the convoy was, the pilot put the VTOL into hover mode and opened the ramp door. The robot gold eagle sitting at the rear was holding an M2010 sniper rifle when he saw a Somalian toting an RPG-7V. He took the shot and quickly killed the target in one shot while the VTOL was still turbulent from the change in momentum. "Nice shot, Rezat." Horus eagerly congratulated the robot eagle while the wolves fast-rope down the streets and fanned out to secure their immediate surroundings. "What can I say? I aim to please." Rezat remarked with a smirk at Horus before he and the Crown prince jumped down.
“Rameses, where are the AMISOM troops? I can see their vehicle wrecks 500 meters from here but no signs of the troops.” Horus inquired as he pressed up against a wall while the VTOL’s engines kicked up a mini dust storm around them. The robot wolves were also taking up positions around the alleyways and dusty boulevards with overlapping arcs of fire. “Patching you to their coms now.” Rameses nonchalantly replied as he began to wire Horus to the Nigerian coms, he soon heard panicking Nigerian soldiers shouting in a mixture of accented English and Igbo over the radio calling for help.
“Can anyone hear me? This is sergeant Yakubu, Hyena 3-1. I have men pinned down by Al-Shabaab, we have taken casualties, some of them are critical. Need urgent reinforcements and MEDEVAC. Send help to the TKY Trading Company building immediately!” The battle roars and crackling of AKM rifles broke through the walls, kicking off cinder blocks and debris filled the background as Horus cracked his neck adjusting his shoulder. “This is Falcon-6, respond to your distress loud and clear. Hold your position, we’re on our way.” Horus stated confidently before gesturing his troops to begin tactical advance towards the ambushed Nigerian troops.
“My God, are we glad to hear from you? Do you have MEDEVAC for my men?” The Nigerian asked urgently over the radio, with Horus replying cautiously. “I got a ground convoy being assembled for MEDEVAC and reinforcements, but we have to clear the area for them first.” Horus however gritted his teeth knowing that he might have overpromised yet again. “Rezat, take up overwatch, and make sure the boulevard is safe for our convoy to roll in.” Rezat nodded at Horus and patted his back before taking flight towards a nearby building and took up position on a high rooftop with his rifle set up ready to engage.
On the ground, the IFVs and MRAPs linked up with Horus and his initial strike team, some of the robots disembarking from the MRAPs, and IFVs happened to be Temujin and Gunter with the two watching each other’s backs. The IFVs were 8x8 sleek and angular wedge-shaped vehicles with V-shaped hulls to minimize damages from IEDs. The unmanned turret had a 30mm main gun along with a coaxial 7.62 M240 machine gun. The turret also had a hexagonal-shaped ATGM pod, which contained three Javelin missiles ready to fire. The turret also had a panoramic CITV that swiveled and rotated to give the crew commander a good view of the environment. The infantry disembarked from the rear via a drop-down ramp, in total, a fully equipped wolf pack of eight can ride in the M3 Sobek IFV.
They fanned out and took up the position left of their MRAP before moving up slowly towards the AMISOM convoy’s wrecks. “Falcon-6, this is Condor 62, we have eyes on a pair of Type 87 mortars. Request permission to engage, over.” The VTOL pilot asked Horus on the coms as he circled the Roc Eagle VTOL craft around the combat area with his co-pilot operating the surveillance system.
“Clear hot, I want those things smoked by the time I get back. Got it?” Horus sternly ordered with a frown on his face, prompting the pilot to nod and switch on the master arms. “Copy that, weapons hot, engaging.” The Roc Eagle VTOL craft began to maneuver its nose into a strafing run pose. Under the nose was a triple-barreled 25mm automatic cannon lowered down its internal weapon bay and its barrels spooled up. “Guns guns guns.” The robot wolf co-pilot exclaimed as he fired the cannon on the pair of mortars.
The Roc Eagle’s fuselage had a pair of hexagonal 70mm rocket pods sliding out of their internal weapon bay, the pilot pulled the trigger, and bombard the Al-Shabaab and SPLF crew with high explosive rockets. The bombardment of 25mm cannon shells and rockets wrecked the open ground the mortars were firing from. The civilian population was so utterly horrified by the strafing run that they ducked down, and hid in their homes.
The co-pilot looked at the thermal screen of his Roc Eagle's cone-mounted camera and scanned the battlefield below. Besides the smoke and fire from the mortars, they saw Horus and his company moving up along the boulevard towards the AMISOM peacekeeper vehicle wrecks. But further away, there were multiple groups of gun-toting SPLF and Al-Shabaab militants roaming down the streets towards the ambush site with some RPG gunners on the rooftops. "Falcon-6, this is Condor 62, we have hostile moving to your position. Be advised women and children are among them, over."
Heeding the pilot's warning, Horus gestured his troops to spread out and began to cover the approaches as they came up to the intersection. "Eyes wide, bad guys are mixed with the civvies, so watch your fire," Horus instructed the robots as he raised his Mk17 SCAR-H battle rifle to low ready. His left hand held its foregrip tightly, while his optic aimed down its M150 ACOG sight at the intersection with a burning wreck of a Nigerian MRAP. "Jeez, my last deployment was in Afghanistan. Even then, my Apache still took a beating from Taliban assholes with RPGs on the mountains." Gunter grimaced to Horus as he peeked around the corner to look at the burning MaxxPro MRAP wreck. "Even angels can still get their wings clipped, heh?" Horus remarked grimly to Earl. "Yeah," the red wolf snorted, "That can happen to ye if ye get sloppy."
Rameses in his operational command room observed Horus, and his troops inside the ambusher's Killzone fanning out. As the robot wolves prepared for a deadly encounter, Rameses saw enemy vehicles moving along the narrow streets paralleling and intersecting with the main boulevards. He noticed how those particular vehicles had greater distances from the mob of infantry. Without mounted weapons and visible signs of bolted armor, those vehicles were VBIEDs. “Falcon-6 be advised, hostile VBEDs are coming your way, make sure that you don’t lose the IFVs or MRAPs.” Rameses warned Horus urgently.
"Rezat, you're weapons-free. Takedown those VBEDs before they get too close." Horus instructed Rezat, who grinned in delightful satisfaction as his trigger finger struck the trigger's length. "Happy to oblige." The gold eagle robot replied as he saw one such VBIED moving down the small alleyway, his scope locked on the vehicle's engine block, and he held his breath for a shot. Rezat pulled the trigger, sending a powerful .300 Winchester Magnum round exiting the barrel, traveling downrange at maximum velocity, the bullet penetrated the engine block. The car spun out of control and crashed into a crumbling building's side and detonated the explosives. A massive boom rippled across the district, as the nearby city block had dust and debris flew across them.
"Did you feel that? Hope that topped your last firework show in Libya." Rezat cockily boasted while loading the next round into the chamber. "Yeah well, it's not like we're competing for collateral damage. Open fire! Get moving towards Hyena 3-1 now!" Horus ordered urgently, hastening his troops to pick up and sprint towards the ambushed Nigerian troops. As the enemy descended on them, rifle crackles and bullets whisked across the battlefield.
"Technical!" One robot shouted out loud, alerting his platoon to the presence of an enemy vehicle with a mounted DshK heavy machine gun that came over the intersection. Gunter took notice and quickly rushed towards and conducted a combat slide near enough to the vehicle. As the DshK machine gunner opened fire, the other robots either took cover or returned fire sporadically. "Somebody take out that damned technical! Rhino 2-2, I need you to lay down fire on that asshole now!" Horus ordered the IFV urgently as the vehicle began to move forward, and the gunner caught sight of the technical. "Copy that sir, we have eyes on target engaging now,"
Gunter acted quickly and fired his M320 grenade launcher at the vehicle, blowing its backside to smithereens. "Have no fear Gunter is here," Earl joked whimsically as the crew of the technical backed off and ran for cover, this gave them an opening to move up and secure the blocking positions needed to evacuate the wounded. "Friendlies! Hyena 3-1, get your wounded ready to move, we have some MRAPs that can take them back to the Airport." Horus ordered Sergeant Yakubu cautiously while keeping his eyes out for trouble around the city block. "Affirmative, thanks for the help Falcon-6. Wait are you...?" Yakubu paused hesitantly, hoping to hear Horus's confirmation. "It's not important right now. Get your wounded out so I can find Colonel Chima." Horus disregarded the sergeant's curiosity and continued with his guards up.
As the Nigerian and fellow AMISOM troops from Gabon, Ghana, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, and others moved their wounded out of the garrisoned buildings and on the MRAPs, Temujin spotted another mob of enemy militants with RPGs and light machine guns approaching them from the East. He also caught sight of a little girl caught out in the open, holding her head with both hands and curled up on the ground. Civilians caught in the line of fire was something his programming dictates he must intervene.
He quickly rushed out firing his M4A1 at the mobs while they sprayed and prayed at him, bullets bounced off his armor as he stood in front of the little girl who screamed and shouted for her mother to save her. "Awww shit, why did that kid have to play the hero? But fine." Gunter gritted his teeth, more out of annoyance than contempt, he fired his M320 grenade at the mob of Al-Shabaab fighters, dispersing them with an explosion that left about a dozen of them dead or wounded with blood and gore splattered all over the place.
"Temujin, get the girl to cover! We'll cover you, lay down suppressive fire on those assholes!" Gunter barked at the other robot wolves who then increased their rate of fire at the approaching enemies, while Temujin grabbed the little girl, holding the child in his left hand and sprinted back towards the safety of her mother, who held out by a doorway for her child. "Get inside and find some shelter until the shooting is over," He instructed her, while she didn't understand every word he said, but she understood safety first and closed the door before thanking him in her native language.
The AMISOM troops flooded the MRAPS with their wounded while then the South African troops kept up suppressing fire on the Al-Shabaab fighters. The Jackal Guards operated Oshkosh MRAPs kept their distances and assisted in the suppression of enemy fighters. Once the vehicles were at full capacity, the AMISOM South African contingent began to withdraw to their base in the Airport. "Rameses, we got the AMISOM evacuated. I'm gonna have Task Force 1-23 set up a perimeter around the Bakara market to continue the AMISOM mission. How copy?" Horus reported calmly over the radio while his head fidgeted and swiveled around.
"I hear you loud and clear. I also have the 501st Armored Battalion disembarked and set up at the Airport. Their howitzers are ready at your disposal. But watch where you aim them, the area has high civilian density." Rameses cautioned Horus as he watched from his holographic battle map that showed the Jackal Guards howitzers set up at the airport with their guns standing by for fire missions.
Horus sighed out hearing this, it was frustrating for him as he had the most potent weapons possible in his arsenal, but he could not use them right away for civilians were in the area. "Roger that. I'll take Gunter and Temujin and search for Colonel Chima. Any ideas where they took him?" Horus's question prompted the Inquisitor robot to begin to examine intelligence from UAVs over the area.
One video from a UAV operated by the South Africans picked up the sight of the SPLF militants dragging a bagged and tied person in military uniform into the heart of the Bakara Market. "Horus, I found your man, looks like they took him to the Bakara Market. You might want to use thermal once you’re inside" Rameses tapped the position on the map, marking the location on Horus's HUD and the robot wolves following him. "Got it, thanks Rameses, you take over and keep the perimeter secured. I got an old comrade to save."
"Don't leave me out of the action. Besides, you're going to need someone to provide overwatch." Rezat chimed in before picking up his rifle and got up from the rooftop he was on. "Avengers, I need three snipers set up around Bakara Market. Get it done, out." Rezat ordered the other robot avians sternly before flying over to Horus and linked up with him as the fireteam to breach and clear the market. He switched out his sniper rifle for a Textron LSAT with 750 rounds worth of 5.56x45mm bullets. "Lt. Colonel Rezat, we got the areas around the market locked down. Task Force 1-23 is moving in for a sweep now. We'll report when we see something important, Archer, out." A robot owl sniper reported to Rezat as he set up his sniper nest with his M24 SWS. “Affirmative, keep your eyes peeled for any enemy escape attempts. I’m going in with Horus.”
With the robot wolves from the 1st Battalion of the 23rd Mechanized Infantry Regiment setting up their perimeter around Bakara Market’s four corners, Horus’s fireteam moved in to begin their search for colonel Chima. The interior of the market saw sporadic resistance from various shops and levels with Al-Shabaab militants firing wildly at them only to see bullets bounce off of Horus’s angular and sleek armor plates or ricochet off of the robot wolves. Rezat was able to suppress his targets giving Gunter the chance to fire off his grenade at them, obliterating the militants in one go.
As Horus and his fireteam sweep the Bakara Market high and low, they used their ultraviolet sensors to pick up the trails of Colonel Chima, tracing him eventually to the warehouses on the other side of the market while the backup fireteams of the Task Force help clear and hold the market to plug escape routes. Horus came to the doorway and stacked up with Rezat covering his back. Temujin listened in and heard Arabic being spoken by the Militants on the other side of the door.
Additionally, he heard a middle-aged man grunting and groaning in pain as he was being punched by the militant’s interrogator. “This is it. Setting up for breach.” Temujin remarked with Horus prepped a flashbang in his talon. Temujin kicked down the door, and Horus tossed in the flashbang that blinded the whole room. Temujin and Horus stormed in, and like how they trained CQB clearing maneuver, they shot the militants dead with well-aimed headshots. Temujin, being much more orthodox, decided to follow up with two more in the chest per target.
“Target secure! Hey, hey look at me. Look at me, are you alright?” Horus came over to Colonel Chima with Gunter behind the colonel ready to cut the rope they tied him with. The colonel coughed repeatedly before looking up at Horus with a battered face. “What took you so long? Having a guided tour around town?” Chima asked sarcastically with a humorous chuckle making Horus giggled along. “Nothing I can’t handle. Come on let’s get you out of here. We’ll catch up when we’re home.” Horus glanced over his shoulder and noticed a camera set up in front of Chima, the militant that he gunned down behind the colonel was holding a machete. All signs suggest an execution video shooting by the SPLF and Al-Shabaab.
“Thanks for getting me out. I guess I’m the damsel in distress this time around.” Chima humorously quipped with Horus holding his hand to lift him, “Took it right out of my mouth.” The gem on Horus’s gauntlet lit up with a strange glow that seemed to mend Colonel Chima wounds, healing scars, drying up dripping blood, and close up ruptures. Before long, Colonel Chima seemed well again with some wear and tear on his uniform. “It’s on the house. Anyway, where are the weapons? I heard that you were clearing the place for a shipment when the ambush happened.” Horus asked cautiously with Colonel Chima pointed towards the tire tracks on the ground floor of the market storage areas. “You see those? They knew we were coming. They took off and ambushed me. Whatever you’re looking for, my friend, I’m sorry to say they’re gone.”
“That’s just great! We got all dressed up for nothing! Nothing you hear me, nothing! Well, not entirely true because we saved you and your men from the wannabe Commieboos.” Horus grumbled and frowned, lamenting the empty-handed situation they were in. With Rezat patting his shoulder sympathetically, “Come on Horus, you did a solid job today considering the situation. Let’s get the colonel back to the AMISOM base, and we’ll work from there.” the robot gold eagle suggested, to which Horus nodded reluctantly. “Alright then, come on Chima old pal, I got a convoy of MRAPs and IFVs ready to tear ass through Mogadishu.” Said Horus as he led Chima out to the convoy of Jackal Guards. Once outside, his Roc Eagle VTOL was seen loitering around the market before approaching for a pickup of the colonel and the crown prince.
Rezat and Horus let Colonel Chima board the craft first before they followed behind and boarded the VTOL. Temujin and Gunter followed as security details strapped in for a flight back to the airport while the other robots of Task Force 1-23 began to fall back one corner at a time around Bakara Market and went back to the Airport as well. Horus flew overhead in his VTOL and to provide close air support if needed, but for the time being it was friendly catching up to Colonel Chima as they shared a Bordeaux Champagne bottle with Cuban Cigars.
“So Chima, how are your kids? Did your son make it through college?” Horus asked jubilantly, prompting Chima to burst into hearty laughter and pulled a photo from his phone out to show Horus. “Glad that you asked, my son, Jonathan, just graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Energy Engineering. Something Nigeria will be needing. Since the damn Chinese vacated the region, Jonathan is going to make Nigeria greater than ever.”
“That’s good to hear, maybe I’ll give him an all-expenses-paid vacation in Egypt. The Nile is always a nice place to relax.” Horus exclaimed with equally jubilant laughter. He then changed subjects with Chima as they came over the airport. “So where did you get the intel about the weapon shipment? I’d wager HUMINT first and foremost.” Horus asked eagerly. Chima nodded to Horus’s guess as their VTOL hovered and landed on the Helipad of the International Airport reserved for the Jackal Guards and operated by their Legio XXI Ferra Lupina (Legion XXI Iron Wolf), the parent unit of Temujin’s Task Force 1-23. “About three days ago, one of our informants in the countryside reported that a shipment of weapons flew in from Ethiopia. They landed in a rural airstrip before shipping the weapons by truck into Mogadishu for the SPLF and Al-Shabaab.”
“Right, so in short, you were trying to intercept the cargo before going for the source.” Horus hypothesized, earning a nod of approval from Chima. “That’s right. But now I don’t know whether to resume operation or just pacify the areas in and around the airport and port. There is a spy in the AMISOM Coalition.” Horus nodded to Chima before the two looked over to the other side of the Airport’s runway, where AMISOM’s Operational Headquarters reside. “Look, how about you take care of the spy? I’ll handle the airstrip, just tell me where your informant is.” Horus suggested to Chima, with such friendly terms, there was no reason to turn it down and nodded. “That sounds fair. He’s in the Jubba River Valley, in the town of Jilib. But if I were you, I’d say you better get there fast today. He might have been compromised, who knows.” Chima replied urgently to Horus, who took the words of caution with a concerned frown on his face. “Okay, thanks for the heads up Chima. I’ll be in there to plan things out, all improv theater just like when I was on Rhodos.”
Horus then took the time to set up his operational Headquarters in the International Airport’s compound with a section of the runway reserved for his troops to land their VTOLs and helicopters. The jets remained on their LHDs on standby to avoid a catastrophic attack by enemy mortars and rocket strikes. Gunter had his attack chopper inside a sheltered hangar with the ground crew working around the clock to keep it operational. A sleek, angular stealth attack chopper with internal weapon bays for its payload of missiles, rockets. A five rotor blades main rotor with canards for sound suppression made his attack chopper an ideal weapon for fast attack and recon patrol.
Inside the planning and C2 room, Horus and Rameses were standing by their holographic strategic map table. The table projected a zoomed-in section of Somalia and rendered the topography in realistic details. With a single swipe in midair, Rameses moved the map towards the Jubba River Valley. He then secured the view around the town of Jilib to give Horus a view of what he was going up against in and around the town. “Here’s our target, codenamed Jacob. He keeps an eye on the town of Jilib and the surrounding areas so he might know where the shipments come from.” Rameses snapped his finger to summon a photo of the African informant looking in his mid 30s.
“The clip note version said don’t shoot him. So what’s the long version?” Horus sarcastically replied while looking at the photo, prompting Rameses to tap on several map grids scattered around the town of Jilib. “There’s a welcoming committee. Go on land, they’ll spot you along the roads with those hidden bunkers, trenches and dug in fighting positions. An approach by air? Let’s just say I hope you enjoy going alone.” Rameses chuckled to Horus while the crown prince frowned at the satellite photos of enemy QW-2 MANPADS and cheap Chinese copy of the Dshk machine guns dotted around the place. There were plenty of trenches around the town connected by hidden bunkers and underground tunnel systems. But he didn’t see any runways for an airstrip.
“Rameses, if I were a Cessna pilot, I could hypothetically count a 5 miles stretch of a straight open highway as a runway, right?” Horus asked his rhetorical question, to which Rameses nodded to him. “Indeed you can. If only a Cessna can haul a large shipment of weapons as well. You’d need a larger cargo plane an An-2 or some Post War models could theoretically land there.” The inquisitor suggested to Horus with a chuckle as he seemed to enjoy Horus’s annoyance as he thought of the possibilities.
The Crown Prince took a moment to zoom the view in on the highway and noticed the odd lack of high trees around the road, an area of 40 meters cleared of obstacles. “The An-12 has a wingspan of 38 meters. That should explain our cargo plane size.” He tapped on one of the zoomed-in views, showing a tire track on the ground suggesting the size of the landing gear tire. “Still a guess, but better than none. So how would you like to approach it? Either way, it won’t be a smooth cloak and dagger operation.” Rameses asked, with Horus looking rather tense by the options he had at hand. “Kick down the door with our armor, MOUT (Military Operation in Urban Terrains) with IFVs and MRAPs. Clear and secure the town before extracting our HVT. Air Support is our panic button and mortar detachment to hammer them.” The Crown Prince explained confidently with his expression changed to that of a grin.

2020.10.16 08:26 Wrathof300 The Shuriman god war: Noxus

The "current" plot of Shurima is the confrontation between Azir and Xerath, the stage was being set for these god-kings to lead their armies against each other to battle for the sovereignty of Shurima. I believe there is potential for Noxus to involve themselves and I want to take a look how that may influence the outcome of this "Shuriman god war".
This post addresses the Noxus side of things I have 2 other posts on Shurima and Targon you don't have to read this to understand those 2.

The Black Rose

Noxus possesses many lands in Shurima, which allows them to control the body of water between Valoran and the Shuriman continent, for this fact alone we can conclude a confrontation between Noxusa nd Shurima is inevitable. While Noxus is preoccupied with the second invasion of Ionia, this would imply Noxus may remain ignorant of Xerath and Azir, on the surface at least.
Xerath and Azir going to war would not only encourage more refugees to flee Shurima for safety in Noxian territory, but it would also leave the remaining armies of the victor, vulnerable for a full scale invasion from Noxus. To this end, this may be Swain's intention if we assume he is aware of Xerath and Azir. To ensure this, Noxus may send saboteurs under the guise of help from the empire, until the time when the empire strikes, and of course among them would be the Black Rose's proxy, Samira.
Xerath for example, has no noteworthy allies, as far as champions are concerned. It is one of the major issues with some of the villains that aren't the Shadow Isles or the Void. The empire, acknowledging Azir as a tyrannical empire wishing to aid Xerath in his quest against the tyrant.
On Azir's end, envoys from the Noxian empire, claiming to have the best interest of the Shuriman people at heart, wishing to aid in stopping tyranny that is Xerath.
Granted Xerath likely would blast any envoy from Noxus to smithereens, I'm thinking Samira ends up allying with Azir and Sivir's faction. Regardless, Samira would leap at the opportunity to take her revenge against Xerath and his army.
However, what if the Black Rose were to extend an invitation to Xerath? Perhaps through another Black Rose champion with connections to Shurima, Cassiopeia. This wouldn't conflict with Black Rose's ties to Samira either, not that they would care, because she isn't their direct operative, Indari is, Samira simply need not be aware. Whether or not Xerath would accept such an alliance with the Black Rose however, is another topic of discussion.
Hypothetically, Xerath loses, what do we expect? They lock him up again? With a connection to the Black Rose, should Xerath lose this war he has an out.
I am very excited to see how Samira's connection to Xerath will be expanded upon in future stories.
Do you think Noxus, whether it be Swain or Le Blanc will prematurely involve themselves with Shurima or do you think they will wait until the dust has settled?

2020.10.16 08:09 StressedNeverBlessed Nighttime peeing after stone removal

Hey all!
I had a 10 mm+ stone removed from my right kidney just a few weeks ago via nephrostoscopy (tube through the back to the kidney and pewpew the stone to smithereens). Unfortunately, I’d been living with that stone and at least one other for about 15 years (do not recommend) and decided to woman up and do something about it this year.
I’m in the healing process, being nearly a whole month post op, and I’ve had my stent removed a week ago. Since surgery, though, I’ve noticed I’m getting woken up in the middle of the night (between 2-3 a.m.) to pee almost every night. I’ve never done this before. Should I be worried? Or is this just because my right kidney is now able to work better? Or maybe it’s just a side effect of drinking more fluids now?
Has anyone else had this happen? I’ve not seen anyone post about it so the worrywart in me had to ask.
Thanks!

Boris’s Apartment, Unknown Slavic Nation, 4:30 AM
Boris had been planning to sleep in that morning, but something woke him up. Or, more accurately, someone.
“Vadim blyat”, Boris groaned as his neighbor revved up his power drill. It was strange: He had sent live dynamite to Vadim as a prank, and it literally blew the man to smithereens, but the next day Vadim had come back as noisy as ever and started loudly welding over the blast-hole in the wall of his apartment-right in the middle of Boris’s daily S.T.A.L.K.E.R. session. Well, Vadim was Vadim, and Boris couldn’t change that, even with a stick of dynamite.
Boris got out of bed and put on his Squatnik Suit along with a nice warm ushanka. Vadim had finished drilling, and-was that noise a sledgehammer? Whatever. Boris went down to the kitchen to make himself a buterbrod for breakfast. Bread? Check. Doctor’s sausage? Check. Cheese? Check. Butter? Check, check, check. Tomato? No, Boris had used his last tomatoes to make himself a salad. But surely he still had mayonez, right?
Oh, blyat.
The mayonez jar was completely empty. Well, time to go shopping.
Boris got into his Lada, with duct-tape Adidas stripes, and started the engine. He tuned the radio to the hardbass station and started off down the road to the nearest grocery store.
* * *
The unmarked black car trailed the striped Lada slowly, making sure to stay off to the side and out of the rear-view mirrors. The driver checked the backseat to check on his passenger.
The KGB agent in the trench coat screwed a long silencer onto his Makarov pistol and checked the chamber, before tucking the gun into the folds of his coat where nobody could see it. He had to be careful in this line of work. There would always be someone trying to kill him, no matter what.
* * *
Boris parked his Lada in front of the store and got out. He saw a man in a trench coat out of his peripheral vision, but thought nothing of it. It was cold in eastern Europe, and trench coats were warm and affordable. Boris entered the store and decided to pick up a few extra things. A nice bottle of vodka, some flour for making blins, a box of eggs, and some kvass for good measure. Then Boris went to the produce aisle and took two ripe tomatoes.
He got to the aisle with the mayo, and there it was. A rack of jars labeled WINIARY MAJONEZ. One of the jars was turned around, and the label had tiny little tears in it, in a pattern of dots and dashes. There was a tiny puncture in the jar’s lid, but it had been sealed. Boris thought nothing of this and took the jar. Mayonez was mayonez, after all.
Boris saw the man in the trench coat looking at the jar in Boris’s hand. Strange. There were plenty of other mayonez jars in the rack.
Boris took his purchases to the checkout counter and paid up: 137 Euros. Boris thought someone was watching him and turned around, but the man in the trench coat was nowhere to be seen.
He took his bag of groceries and put it in the back of his Lada, got into the driver’s seat, and started up the engine to head back to his apartment.
* * *
The KGB man swore under his breath. The message had been bought by some random idiot-no, it was that YouTube star, who lived right next to the target. Even worse. He really didn’t want to drag civilians into this. He got back into his black car, and the driver asked, “How did it go, Volk?”
“Badly.”
* * *
What will happen next?

Chapter 4: First to Fight

Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo
June 1st, 2025, 03:15 Hours
Belisarius sat inside the cargo bay of the A400M with his fellow robots, about 116 of them including himself. He looked out of the window to see the starry sky and misty cloud outside. The plane was approaching the airport of Brazzaville at low altitude for landing, each of the robots sat on their chairs on each side of the plane as it came in for landing. “Anubis, what’s our plan when we’re on the ground? Beside meeting the Gaulois and German forces that are supporting us.” Belisarius curiously questioned Anubis who sat next to him.
“We’ll be part of their offensive into the Congo to shake things up for Oriental Security. The situation on the ground is chaotic. I’m afraid.” Anubis replied before Belisarius heard a deafening artillery howl and detonation nearby. He cringed at first as the blast of the shell vibrated upwards, affecting the A400Ms that were coming down to Brazzaville’s airport. “I think I get the point, further briefing once we’re on the ground?” Belisarius asked before looking out of the plane’s porthole to the sight of a burning and smoking Brazzaville. “Exactly, once we got the situation under control, you’ll continue your hunt, and I’ll sort out the arrangements.” Anubis sighed as he looked out the porthole at the Chinese shelling of Brazzaville.
“Affirmative, sir, I’ll get it done. Any backups just in case the fight turns grossly against our favors?” Belisarius asked cautiously, to which Anubis looked over to the neighboring city of Brazzaville just on the other side of the Congo River. “We do, the Germans have already placed a brigade of their Panzergrenadiers on the ground with the French Foreign Legion 2nd REP.” The mere mention of the word Legion got Belisarius ears to perk up his eyes and seemed peaked with interests as to what this might mean. “Legion? I never thought the idea of Roman Legion would survive to this day.” Belisarius bluntly remarked.
As the plane landed on the runway, they felt the wheels skidding and slight turbulence vibrating through the fuselage before finally coming to a halt as the first A400M was on the ground before taxiing into the nearby parking lot. Its cargo ramp dropped down, and before the robots disembarked in droves, they already heard the howling howitzers shells and the tremors from the impacts. The robots quickly sprinted out with their equipment in hands, rucksacks, and magnetically attached backpacks shuffled along with their movements. Buildings around them were still standing, somewhere struck by shelling that left a permanent scar. Any structures taller than two-story were almost certain to lose at least half of their form.
They were using HK416A5s assault rifles with HK417A2s battle rifles for the most part. Some of them were carrying HK MG5 to provide suppressive fire on enemy targets behind hardened covers, while others were carrying the M27IAR as the fireteam’s Automatic Rifleman. In addition to those, some of the bots were carrying Carl Gustaf M3 Recoilless Rifles as the anti armor specialists of their respective units.
The robots ran a system diagnostic of their tactical and strategic internet system, at a fireteam level they had the PAN (Personal Area Network) wherein a handful of robots nearby can instantly exchange data at an instant. From a squad to platoon level, they had a specialist carrying a magnetically strapped backpack for modem and LAN equipment.
At the Company to Battalion level and above, the same specialist would carry a similar backpack but with a parabolic antenna link with satellite systems in geosynchronous orbit. Together these formed their ARGOS (Augmented Reality Ground Operations System), the pinnacle of digital military information systems. Most of the robot wolves made their ways to the riverbanks of Brazzaville with their mortars and machine gun teams. There, they set up a base of fires and defilade positions while mortar crews rain precision fire on Chinese defenders by the docks of Kinshasa.
Belisarius double-timed with Anubis towards a jeep and boarded it. Other robots were either busy disembarking from their planes or assisting human evacuations from the city. In the chaos of the moment, the French Foreign Legionnaire who drove the jeep for Anubis and Belisarius kept his eyes on the road. No time for pleasantries, let alone introduction even when he was the chauffeur for a being beyond his wildest imaginations.
"Back in 2023, Europa began their Second Rush to Africa. They aim to overthrow pro-China satellite states in the region and reform the long corrupt regimes of the continent to a more, shall we say, stable and open democracy. Spearheading this is France, one of the most significant colonial owners of the region in the last century." Said Anubis as they passed through the streets of Brazzaville.
Belisarius listened to Anubis while looking around him, seeing the sight of civilians battered by shells, surviving infants and toddlers crying incessantly at their dead parents, half-buried under the rubbles, their cries attracted relief aid workers coming to their rescue. "Our job is to help open the path into Congo, start by taking Kinshasa. That's where you come in." Anubis spoke in a steady tone as they arrived at the Ile M'Bamou, a massive island in the middle of the Congo River where the French Foreign Legion and German Panzergrenadiers were busy with building pontoon bridges to ford across the river to assault Kinshasa's N'djili International Airport.
As they were coming close to the construction site of the pontoon bridge, mortar bombardments began to intensify with the loud bang and booms of mortar shells hitting the dirt, kicking up debris and soil into the air. Occasionally, a human flew into the air with their limbs decapitated. The worst cases were the complete obliteration of their bodies, leaving nothing to identify. One such shell exploded next to the PVP armored car, knocking them over instantly. The shock of the blast left Belisarius dazed along with Anubis. The driver was unconscious, with his arms resting on the wheel and window of the PVP.
Belisarius grunted as his thigh compartment switched open. He reached his hand in and grabbed the hilt of the Gladius saber. Acting quickly and decisively, Belisarius slashed off the seatbelts that were holding him back. He then cut the belts for Anubis and the driver, allowing the Jackal to escape. "Thanks, old friend. I'll take the driver to the treeline, you get to the pontoon bridge and help them." Anubis grabbed the knocked out driver by his wrist and pulled him out of his car seat. The Jackal jumped out of the vehicle, Belisarius followed suit and sprinted towards the pontoon bridge under the unremitting mortar barrage.
Shells howled through the sky, tearing down trees and digging up soils, forcing soldiers and civilians to run for cover, hiding underground, in foxholes, or just under a treeline. As Belisarius came to the Pontoon Bridge construction site, he saw the German Pioneers and French Army Engineers were busy with bridge layer vehicles to set down a proper bridge on the Congo River. The troops there were shelled incessantly by the Chinese on the other side of the rivers.
"Who's in command here?" Belisarius instinctively asked one of the German Panzergrenadiers there. The Efreitor hastily pointed Belisarius to an observation post sitting on an elevated position of the isle. "Es ist Kapitän Kleinenberg! Er ist im Beobachtungsposten versuchen, für Gegenbatterie zu rufen. Wer bist du?" The Efreitor asked confusedly looking, at the seven feet tall Belisarius.
The translation software in Belisarius quickly provided the wolf with a rough translation of the Bundeswehr saying. His voice then received a synthesized version to communicate with the soldier in German, albeit lacking a distinctive dialect or accent. "Your reinforcement." He uttered tersely before sprinting up the hill towards the Observation Post much to the shock of the combined Panzergrenadiers and French Foreign Legionnaires. The robot werewolf opened the door and entered the OP before crouching down to avoid being sniped by a Chinese marksman or trained sniper. "Are you Captain Kleinenberg? I'm told you could use a hand." Said the wolf who caught the captain and his aides off-guard.
"Who the hell are you? And who permitted you to participate in this operation?" Captain Kleinenberg asked confusedly to Belisarius as he cringed under the shock and pressure of sustained mortar bombardment. "Introductions are for later. What do you need help with right now?" Belisarius insisted to the Captain, who then relented as he felt the barrage pressuring on his head. "I need some sharpshooters to take out those fucking mortar crews. They live, the bridge collapses. Get me?" The Captain ordered Belisarius, who nodded in acknowledgment, "I don't care how many, only where." He replied tersely, impressing the Captain with his can-do and no-nonsense attitude. "Alright, our scouts reported the mortars are firing from the marshes next to the airport."
Taking a moment to study the map, Belisarius saw that he could expect tree lines obstructing his views and dispersed mortar positions hiding in the shrubs. Perhaps some snipers to spot targets as well. "I need a weapon," Belisarius stated, prompting a Lieutenant to guide him out to the weapon rack. "Right this way." The Lieutenant gave Belisarius an MSG-90A2 sniper rifle with a bipod. "We're a bit short on ammo here. Radio jamming is making it difficult for us to get resupplied in time. Hopefully, our runner isn't dead before delivering his message." Said the Lieutenant as he handed Belisarius some spare magazines for his MSG-90 rifle. The robot wolf took the magazines and a plate carrier vest to carry the ammo.
"What's your name?" Belisarius asked the Lieutenant before following him out to the battlefield. "Anton, Leutnant Anton Gruber. Whatever you do out there, do it fast. We need the bridge consolidated before the tides pick up." Anton spoke urgently to Belisarius, prompting him to nod before sprinting out and took up a position near a French Foreign Legion's Pioneer foxhole. He laid down on his stomach and scanned the opposite bank with the MSG's scope.
He spotted the first mortar crew wearing camouflage from top to bottom with their weapon lobbing shells over the water. The robot wolf aimed down sight and began to calculate variables such as distance, gravity, rotation of the Earth, and so on. He fired once the calculation concluded, with the bullet landed on the mortar shell's wooden crate. The following detonation killed the entire mortar crew and their weapon.
Belisarius quickly switched on his thermal vision and aimed down the MSG's scope. He scanned the riverbank and opened fire on the enemy mortar crews and snipers. One by one, the Chinese dropped like flies before they began to fall back under a hail of automatic lead from NATO forces. "They are retreating. The bridge is safe now, time to move across and take the airport." The Lieutenant declared eagerly as the French Foreign Legion began to cross the pontoon bridge with German Leopard 2A7+ tanks to support them. Belisarius accompanied the Legionnaire as their shock trooper. He received a FAMAS FELIN rifle with fourteen magazines from one of the Legionnaire.
His curiosity grew as he held the bullpup assault rifle in his hand. The robot wolf managed to identify the cocking handle on the top side of the FAMAS and pulled the bolt down to check his ammo. His HUD ran a scan of the weapon and fed him information on its effective range, rate of fire, ammo capacity, fire modes. Once he had digested the technical performance and instructions, he cocked his head aside and began to head out with the humans. "Sledgehammer here, we have eyes on an enemy short-range SAM system. Engaging now." The Leopard 2A7+ Commander reported on the coms network. The crew loaded the 120mm Rheinmetal's L44 gun with a SABOT round as the main gun aimed at the HQ-12 missile truck.
With a booming thump sound, the gun muzzle breathed out a gust of flame, and the SABOT round flew towards the missile truck, and the vehicle exploded into a flaming wreck. However, the victory was short-lived, for the defending Chinese troops began to retaliate with machine-gun fire at the assaulting troops, and ATGMs flew towards the Leopard tank. "Leopard Zwei under attack! Request immediate assistant, over!" The commander called over the coms as the French Legionnaire took up firing positions and assaulted the ATGM nests.
"Lieutenant Gruber, where is the enemy jammer?" Belisarius asked while propped up against a tree. "About two 500 meters from where we are, the Chinese set up their jammers near the airport to mess with our coms." Hearing this while under a hail of enemy machine gun fires and the constant pressure of their automatic grenade launcher made Belisarius cagey.
The sooner they got rid of that jammer, the sooner they can call in Artillery from German howitzers. "Alright, Lt. Gruber, I'll destroy the jammer, and you call in artillery on the enemy position. Understood?" With only a single nod from Gruber, Belisarius sprinted away towards the edge of the airport. His robot wolf mobility and the digitigrade legs made his rapid advance incredibly fast, passing through the thick foliage and treelines. The Chinese were left bewildered by the lighting movement. He came barreling through the treelines and fell into a Chinese trench with his foot planted into one of their faces. His feet generated crunching sounds as they crushed a Chinese skull. Belisarius swiveled his body over to spray on the Chinese manning the HJ missile system.
As the Chinese defending that particular trench died a brutal and swift death, Belisarius grabbed their ATGM system and rotated around to aim at the Oriental Security operated Type-90 APC. The wolf fired the missile while keeping the weapon sight fixed firmly on the vehicle to guide the ATGM. The result was a violent penetration of the vehicle's hull and concluded with a fiery fireball with the crew screaming inside their steel coffin.
"Did you take out an enemy APC with their ATGM?" Gruber asked excitedly over their coms. However, the message came through garbled by the jammer. "Say again, Gruber. I can't hear you." Belisarius asked as he moved forward ahead of the others. The French Foreign Legionnaire followed up with their VABs and VBLs supporting the assault.
The Leopard 2A7 tank had another HJ-12 missile flown at it. This one came close only to be swatted down by the vehicle's APS system intercepting it. The French Foreign Legionnaire reacted quickly and opened fire furiously at the hiding position of the AT crew. M2 machine guns opened fire furiously to suppress the AT crew while the main gun fired an HE shell that blew away the vegetation of the riverbank.
As Belisarius led the assault further towards the airport, the vegetation gave way to a clear sightline of the airport's runway filled with J-11B jets with PLAAF markings. But what concerned Belisarius the most was the lack of cover from where he was towards the Jammer near the tarmac building.
As the Leopard 2 tank crept up to the edge of the forestry with the French Foreign Legionnaire following to support it, Lt. Gruber came up behind Belisarius, looking exhausted by the constant stress and running from before. "Hey, you have a way with charging ahead, don't you? Anyway, you got eyes on that enemy jammer?" Gruber asked while looking through his binoculars at the Chinese made Electronic Jammer. "I do. Resistance is light so far, but that doesn't seem right." Belisarius remarked as he laid down on his stomach, scanning the runway ahead of him. "Nein, they're moving reinforcements in to knock us back. We must take the tarmac. I can call in artillery support from there."
"Well, consider it done. I'll clear the way for you. Just rain fire at first sight of the enemy." Belisarius replied and stood up. The Legionnaire formed up behind him with additional troops moving in to back them up. These being German Panzergrenadiers with their Puma IFVs. The Chinese defending the airport ran behind their sandbags and barricades to set up firing positions. With machine guns and grenade launchers, they waited patiently for the NATO assault to inevitably come at them. Belisarius came over to the Leopard 2 and climbed aboard it to get the commander's attention. "Don't waste your shot on infantry. Aim for the jammer first. Leave the infantry to me." Belisarius instructed the commander, who acknowledged the coordination and relayed the instruction to his crew.
Sledgehammer's loader put an APFSDS round into the chamber. The gunner trained his sight on the mobile jammer array, and the commander permitted them to fire. The shell flew out of the 120mm main gun and slammed into the PLA's jammer array. The Electronic Jammer violently erupted into flame and burned down. Panicked, the Oriental Security troops were scrambling to douse the fire before it spread to the J-11s.
The defenders on impulse fired desperately at the attackers behind the treelines, cutting down branches, twigs. Some bullets ricochet and hit the French Foreign Legionnaire, either killing or wounding them. Gruber, on instinct, ducked down and held his helmet with both hands, groaning and gritting his teeth under the machine gunfire.
At the very least, communication for NATO troops had become much less arduous. Belisarius quickly called Anubis on their cyber coms to get a situation report. "Sir, we've destroyed the enemy's Jammer. Assault at the airport is on-going. What support do you have for us?" Anubis, on the other end of the line, quickly responded to the report with great urgency in his tone.
"Belisarius! The Chinese are sending reinforcements towards the airport. I'm sending the 108th to assist you now, but they need time to get across the Congo River. ETA: 10 minutes." He knew that it was too easy for their initial assault. Why didn't the Chinese scramble their J-11s jet remained unknown, but he could infer one possible reason being to avoid escalation. Even then, it was a rather flimsy excuse, even on the Chinese part.
Being the ever punctual robot, Belisarius quickly took potshots at the Chinese machine gunners. Before the MG crew could resume fire, he fired some more accurate shots at their heads, knocking them down one by one while the Foreign Legionnaire crept up. They opened fire at the Chinese defenders of the Airport and made flanking maneuvers with support from German Puma IFVs laying down suppressive fire. Belisarius sprinted with one such squad, making a beeline towards the tarmac and gunning down the defenders effortlessly. Lt. Gruber quickly ran up the tarmac with his spotter team before eventually arriving at the top to set up an OP.
"Hammer, this is Muninn. We have eyes on a large concentration of enemy armored forces situated on the clearing to the south of the airport. Request immediate Anti-Armor barrage on my coordinates over." Gruber urgently called on the PzH2000s while peering through his binoculars to the sight of the incoming enemy armor. As they watched Chinese Type-96 tanks rolling towards them with various APCs support, Gruber felt like he was about to be run over by armored treads.
Belisarius, on the ground with other French Foreign Legionnaires, was digging into fighting positions. They parked their tanks and IFVs by the choke points into the airport's runway. "Verstanden Muninn, feuern Sie dichtes Artilleriefeuer auf Ihre Zielkoordinaten ab." Gruber then transmitted the coordinates to the crew using a stylus pen on a command tablet he had with a few taps and swipes.
Once the crew received their target coordinates, they fired off barrages of 155mm guided Anti Armor rounds at the incoming Type-96 tanks. The artillery roared a thunderous bellow, with their shells soaring through the sky, tearing through clouds like Thor's Mjolnir hammer. They soon came down on the Type-96 tanks and knocked out a large portion of the Chinese tank platoon, sending turrets flying into the air like Lego pieces. Vehicle components smashed to smithereens. The following APCs met the same fate, with the Leopard 2s scoring direct hits upon direct hits. Some of the Leopard 2s even scored a double kill with their shells penetrating through multiple APCs that happened to line up.
“Muninn, das ist Hammer. Können wir eine KBE?” The artillery crew asked the now much more invigorated Lt. Gruber as he watched the artillery shells raining death and destruction on the Chinese tank formations. "Hammer, das ist Muninn. Feindliche Panzer nahmen schwere Verluste, mehr Fahrzeuge zerstört." Additional infantry struggled to wade forward, only to curl up in a fetal position under the constant barrage. Others tossed up smoke grenades to cover themselves, then pushed forward under the cover, only for them to be cut down by machine gunfire. The dug in, Panzergrenadiers, and French Foreign Legion had the benefits of thermal optics to pierce through the thick smokescreen and dust clouds kicked up by the artillery shells.
Even Belisarius could do little other than to pick off enemy stragglers as they came close to his position. The French Foreign Legionnaire and German Panzergrenadiers around him kept up their fire. Occasionally, they pass over a spare magazine to keep him in the fight. Constantly pressuring their enemies and breaking their will to fight.
Their method, while seems excessive and brutal, was efficient since the enemies broke and ran for their dear life. For a moment, Gruber felt exhilarating, a thrill, and high of victory rushing over him as he watched the Chinese breaking off and ran as far as possible. But as Gruber and his Forward Observer team celebrated their victory, a mortar shell came crashing down on the tarmac.
Belisarius had a knee jerk reaction as he recoiled under pressure and shock by the barrage. The Chinese mortar barrage came like a downpour of steel and explosives on NATO troops holding the Airport. Many of them have to duck down and wait for the mortar barrage to die down. The howitzers from the German side of the battlefield soon counter-battery the Chinese mortars, silencing them with a steel rain down on the slums south of the Airport.
"Damn it, Gruber? Gruber? Gruber!" Belisarius called out to the Lieutenant as he ran out to search for him under the rubbles. What the robot wolf found after digging through the debris was a gnarly and disfigured remains of the Lieutenant. His right arm and leg were no more, just fleshy remains with a pool of his blood. His head and torso remained intact. But no hope for the man to regain conscient. He had gone to God in Heaven now.
"Requiescat in Pace," Belisarius uttered before closing Gruber's eyes and continued his search around the place for the remains of the Forward Observer Team. Save for the twisted and scattered bits of flesh and blood. Their helmets and body armor saved a good deal of their corpses for identification. As the French Foreign Legionnaire and German Panzergrenadiers pushed up with their reinforcements, they began to clear through the surrounding building blocks in quick and dirty firefights with pockets of Chinese defenders.
The Oriental Security mercenaries, however, were less than thrilled with the idea of facing a trained and well-equipped hostile force. Many of them surrendered without a fight, while some others fired sporadically before falling back. Belisarius participated in the action, chasing the enemies up to the bridge over the river dividing the city's downtown area from its western suburbs and slums.
As the day wore on, Belisarius returned to the airport with the 108th Regiment to rest. The latter was busy with rescuing civilians in Brazzaville and keeping the enemies occupied in the harbor areas of Kinshasa, feigning preparation for an amphibious landing. Belisarius went into a casualties collection tent, counting the dead and wounded they had sustained so far. He estimated their casualties in the area of 20 KIAs and an additional 25 WIAs. While far from unacceptable casualties figures, Belisarius could tell from the looks on the survivor's faces, each loss was a toll on the survivors. On the front and at home.
The 108th Regiment, in the meantime, proceeded to convert the Airport into their base of operation in the Congo. The A400Ms from subsequent flights began to land on the runway with various reinforcements, supplies, vehicles, and infrastructure support. As they worked and toiled around the clock, Anubis came to Belisarius, accompanied by the German General and a French Colonel, alongside them was a robot wolf with a rod of Aescelpius symbol painted on his pauldrons. Belisarius took notice and glanced over, noticing the German officer appeared to be a Brigadier General Hans Holzer. And the French Colonel to be Colonel DuBoise, French Foreign Legion 2e REP. "You must be Belisarius, the one who saved the crew of the Calypso?" Holzer asked as he extended a hand out to Belisarius.
"Yes, that I am. You must be the commanding officer of the expeditionary force." Belisarius inferred, to which Holzer burst into a chuckle at the robot's observation ability. "Ja, I am appointed by Berlin to lead the Bundeswehr contingent. He is Colonel DuBoise, leader of the French Foreign Legion 2nd Parachute Regiment." Holzer introduced DuBoise to Belisarius. The French colonel was wearing his green-covered helmet of the 2nd Foreign Legion Parachute Regiment. His insignia and rank were kept low-key by design to avoid being a sniper bullseye. "Monsieur, Paris is in your debt for your selfless service today." Colonel DuBoise stated to Belisarius as he shook the robot's hand. "It was nothing, just doing my job," Belisarius replied humbly.
"He's quite humble, it seems. Is this normal for the robots you made?" Holzer asked Anubis, to which the Jackal seems to make a rather reserved expression and attitude. "Not really. Some are more boisterous and boastful. Others like Belisarius are soft-spoken gentlemen. Their personalities varied from unit to unit, especially after deployments and accruing personal experiences." Anubis calmly explained to the bewildered NATO officers, who could not believe their ears.
"They develop personalities? Is it possible for A.Is to do so? I thought they were only far-flung future fantasies." Holzer exclaimed, confusedly to Anubis. He saw Anubis nonchalantly nodded to him, "Indeed, they can. How are they supposed to perform half as good as human soldiers if they can't gain experiences and develop personalities?" Anubis asked rhetorically, to which neither Holzer nor DuBoise had an answer.
"But how do you create these A.Is and program them?" Holzer asked curiously, to which Anubis glanced his eye over to the corpses of the dead German Panzergrenadiers and French Foreign Legionnaire. "A human soul's fragments and an A.I symbiosis. A method that no current human-computer algorithm or programming technique can catch up." The jackal deity spoke coldly, his hand reaching out to the body bag of Lt. Gruber and unzipping it to inspect the corpse. "A human soul? Surely, you can't be serious?" Holzer nervously inquired. Anubis didn't seem at all jesting with the NATO officer when he turned to them. His robot jackal face and optics shot them a glare that said it all. "Never was. I can demonstrate if you are willing to see."
To both Holzer and DuBoise, it sounded like a morbid invitation, the childlike curiosity with the desire to learn more of these robots. And yet, in the back of their minds, they could not help but feel something gnawing at them. A feeling that whatever they might learn would not look or sound so well to the public. "How long do you think it will take for this one?" Anubis asked the Physician robot. The white wolf with the blue rod of Aescelpius then bent over to inspect the corpse, putting his palm on Gruber's chest and head. "A day of work, no more, no less. I can salvage his brains and vital organs like the heart, lungs, digestive and reproductive organs." The doctor spoke bluntly. Holzer and DuBoise were shocked to hear of the process's specific details sounding like organ harvesting.
"Is this organ harvesting? Are you going to dissect his remains to take his organs out? How does that have anything to do with your robots?" DuBoise protested, being rather outraged by the grotesque idea Anubis had in mind. The Jackal deity didn't seem to care much for the Frenchman's fuming rage and simply crossed his arms before his chest. "Synthetic organ components. The Nanites I developed will assimilate them into robot components. Get it done." Anubis ordered the physician, who then zipped up the body bag and picked him up, carrying him away to a mobile lab module at the airport's east side. "I do not consent to this. The German public and government do not consent to this. How are you- am I supposed to explain to them?" Holzer furiously asked as he followed Anubis and the physician while Belisarius accompanied them to witness the process.
"Let me handle the public outrage and banana journalists." Anubis sternly remarked before seeing the corpse of Gruber being placed on an operating table by the physician. "You may want to step back." The physician suggested to Belisarius, who sighed out but conceded. They spectated from a shielded section of the lab module.
Inside the operating room, automated medical arms dissect his body, carefully scalped his head, and open his skull to extract his human brains. Each organ was placed inside a canopic jar-like container by the physician. Filled with preservative liquid, he continued his work vigorously as he began to open a large cylinder container, revealing a robot wolf frame on standby. Holzer and DuBoise saw it was a seven feet tall robot body, with chrome grey and silver armor plates top to bottom.
The physician then tapped the buttons on nearby keyboards to open the cylinder, letting cold liquid nitrogen hissing out. They saw the cranial unit open up several flaps. The human brain and organs, in turn, were injected by the physician with a strange liquid metal substance. The grey and silver metal goo once made contact with the preservative liquid, began to fill up the containers, and began the assimilation process.
The brain and organs began to turn synthetic with green circuit boards outlines. The physician then picked up the brains before inserted it into the cranial unit, and the flaps closed in, sealing the morphing brain tightly inside the cranial space. The mechanical arms surgically removed the robot armor plates and cut open the stomach region, allowing the physician to graft the organs into the body, with the Nanites inside moving them into position with the endoskeleton.
With that done, they saw a tendril latched into the back of the robot wolf's head, where his neck and head met. The tendril lodged itself deeply into the neural outlet port. Holzer and DuBoise saw a computer monitor displaying a text reading "Programming process: 0%". "Phase 1 is complete. This unit will be ready by tomorrow for review. Till then, there won't be much to report. I'll let you know what I managed to salvage from Lieutenant Gruber." The physician summarized to Anubis, who nodded to the robot.
"Thank you. Keep me posted." Holzer and DuBoise were less than thrilled. They were both disgusted by the surgery and the idea of robotizing their dead. It was effectively giving Gruber, a dead man, no rest from life. For now, they retired to have a meal until reports of the process stream in.
Horus was in the cafeteria attending lunch with the troops on board the Tartarus. The falcon crown prince sat at a table with Temujin and an odd red robot wolf. The red one looked almost identical to Temujin in build, if it weren’t for the red armor plates with the gold eagle emblem on his pauldron with a pair of crossed swords. His serial number and code appeared to be CLU-00591 GUNTER. They saw a news report from the Congo, showing Anubis and the robot wolves were in combat with the Chinese Oriental Security troops. “Will ya look at that. Anubis is having a field day with the press if he likes to be caught on cam as you.” Gunter stated in a gruff Texan voice and smirked while eating his meal.
“Yeah, only he never does like the attention. Always the dark knight, he is. Get in then get out, leaving no traces behind.” Horus remarked to Gunter as the crown prince ate his bird seeds from a small bowl and some hot meal on the navy tray. “I can’t fault him on that. But I think he could still use some publicities, might help bring in the cold hard cash to spend on the boys.” Said Gunter with a chortle as he ate the meal in his tray. Horus turned over to the red robot wolf and asked him.
“So what are you going to do once we’re on the ground? Ground pounder or Airwolf?” Gunter took notice of Horus’s question and tossed up a coin he had in a leather pouch. The coin spun in the air, flipping between Head and Tail before landing in Earl’s palm and it’s a Head. “Well, ground pounder it is. At least they gave me infantry training. In my lifetime, a pilot got basic firearm training and SERE. But man, when ya a robot with a robot brain, learning is as easy as shoving installing a software.”
Horus nodded to Gunter and patted his back in a friendly manner. “Even then, we still play it safe. You watch my back, I’ll watch yours. Catch you later Earl.” Horus commented before getting up and returned the lunch tray to the cafeteria, before heading back to his cabin on the Tartarus. He was afforded the officer quarters with a fairly spacious room on a ship. The room had an old analog clock hung on the wall, with a board for Horus to pin a world map, and photos of relevant individuals like Kong, Faisal, LeMonde, and the Nordwyrm Virus into place.
Horus pinned Kong's photo on Ethiopia with red strings connecting him to the Nordwyrm Virus, LeMonde, and Faisal. The extra photos were in the HVIs category so he can quickly keep track of them. He sat down and marked the days left before arriving in Somalia when He suddenly received a call from Anubis on their communication nexus and quickly answered.
“Hey bro, what’s up? Looks like you got one helluva press media storm in Kinshasa, huh? Any plans for press coverage and publicity stunts?” Horus asked in a playfully friendly manner, adding in his taste of jests. “Besides the usual phrase of no comments, and some trophy displays, not much. Besides, I got something I need to go over with Belisarius. He did well today, at least."
“Yeah, about that, go easy on him Anubis, if anything it’s my fault that got us all into this. He’s trying to fix the problem before it gets worse. But are you sure that I have to be there? I’ll be out in the open with zero deniability.” Horus inquired with a sigh as he laid down on the bed. “Trust me, you’ll need it. If you want to be a king, learn the concept of consequences first. Otherwise, we’ll have a bastard son on the throne, and I’m sure that neither you nor anyone else sees that as a good sign.” Anubis sternly stated, prompting Horus to make a thick gulp and nodded to Anubis’s harsh words.
“I understand, I won’t let you down Anubis.” Horus, however, heard Anubis made a quick comeback to his promise. “No, Horus, don’t disappoint yourself. May the Hidden One guide your path to the throne.” Anubis replied with Horus nodding to the statement. “You too, Anubis. I love you, take care of yourself and Belisarius as well.” Horus then hung up the call to contemplate the information he had, by now he was roughly two days away from arriving in Somalia.
But before he took a slumber, he pulled out a drawer and grabbed his onyx black tablet computer, and switched on the screen. The screen had a photo of Horus and Anubis standing by their chariot, a prized family possession. The vehicle had an azure blue color with gold ornate Isis figure on the front. The wheels were wooden and reinforced by iron hubcaps, a rarity for what was once a bronze civilization.
Horus stroked at the screen gently, trying his best not to scratch or dent it. He sighed out melancholy, looking at a simpler time when they had time for fun and games. Back then, he would race wildly around the Hippodrome as the champion of Egypt against others like Greeks, Romans, Goths, Gaulois, and Thracian. The Crown Prince then entered the password of his device and went into a file folder to go over intel reports about Somalia.
The first report that came to his attention was timestamped September 5th, 2022, by the Information Warfare Command of the Jackal Guards. This one had an attached photo of a red banner with a yellow hammer and sickle symbol in the middle. The report's headline pronounced, "Somali People's Liberation Front, a Chinese footprint in East Africa, and possible strategic targets." Horus then began to read through the report, going over paragraphs and sections outlying what these factions were.
"Formed by unknown and never before seen leftist provocateur and activist, who goes by the name Mohamed Burhaan. The SPLF champions a cause of Somali unity against perceived 'Imperialist aggressors.' Their method of recruitment lately has been to align elements in the country's society under their Socialist umbrella. Mainly the DAESH linked Al-Shabaab militants, clan militias, and pirates to intimidate the populace from accepting aids from AMISOM III Coalition."
The report read, and Horus grew more and more intrigued by the information it had to offer. He began to go through the various details like the supposed alliance of religiously motivated militants like Al-Shabaab would align with the supposedly Socialist SPLF coalition. One adjective was highlighted in yellow by the IWC Inquisitors for him to notice. "Tenuous." A word that gave insight into the nature of the alliance in question, Horus himself could surmise that one had the gunmen, and the other had the heavy weapons for the prolonged insurgency.
"Al-Shabaab militants have entertained the thought of acquiring up-to-date weaponry, modern flak jackets, equipment as well as an arsenal of heavy weapons and vehicles. The SPLF, through their connections to Oriental Securities in Ethiopia, provides such weapons. Along with technical expertise to train and maintain those weapons as well as the growing crop of Type-59 tanks. While woefully outdated, it would make for terrifying encounters for the AMISOM III troops who did not expect such weapons in Somalia."
Horus grew more and more intrigued by the report as he went through the highlighted words and paragraphs. "A debt-trap diplomacy move. Too bad Al-Shabaab is a useful idiot, so are the SPLF." Anubis commented while reading the report. He stroked his worriedly, however, knowing that Al-Shabaab's fanatical militants would not go down without a fight even if it meant suicide vests against one robot wolf. "Better keep an eye on Temujin and Earl, no telling what those savages would do to them." Horus murmured cautiously before putting the tablet back into the drawer and dozed off.
